Will of Michael Carthrick

The will of Michael Carthrick of Ipswich, dated 16:11:1646 was proved in the Ipswich court 30:1:1647. the following copy is taken from the record contained in the Ipswich Deeds, volume I, leaf 30, the original is missing.

I Michael Carthrick of Ipƒwich in New England Carpenter being weake in body but of good memory thanks be to the lord doe make & ordaine this my laƒt will & Teƒtament in mann & forme following firƒt I comitt by body vnto the earth there to be interred according to the diƒcretion of myne executrix and my ƒoule into the hands of god that gave it and as for my outward eƒtate as folioweth


Imprimis I leave my wholl eƒtate of which I am now poƒƒeƒƒed in the hands of my wife to be improved by her for her owne & my childrens good vntill my ƒonne John ƒhall accompliƒh the age of 21 yeares alƒoe I give vnto my ƒonne John my howƒe wherein I now dwell withth e barne out howƒes frnces & howƒlott wth all thapprtenancs to them baelonging and alƒoe all other my lands & meadow of which I am now poƒƒeƒƒed to him & his heires for ever when he ƒhall accompliƒh the age of one & Twenty yeares to be delivred vnto him in good condicon & repaire fitt for habitacon & vƒe alƒoe my minde & will is That my two children John & Mildred ƒhalbe brought vp by my wife vntill the tyme of the putting forth of my ƒonne or at his full age & vntill the tyme of marriage or full age of my daughter Alƒoe my will is that my ƒonne ƒhalbe by my wife kept at ƒchoole pvided there be a ƒchoole in the Towne where ƒhe liveth vntill the age of 14 or 15 yeares yet ƒoe as that at tymes his mother ƒhall have power as the condicon of the family & her neceƒƒetiesƒhall require to take him off to be helpfull to her in her buƒineƒƒe as the overƒeers & his mother ƒhall ƒee cauƒe further my will is that my ƒonne John at the age of 14 or 15 yeares as the overƒeers ƒhall thinke good ƒhalbe putt out to ƒome trade and that his mother ƒhall then furniƒh him with dubble apparrell & pay for his beƒt advantage wither for his putting forth or otherwiƒe according to the diƒcretion of the overƒeers further I giue vnto my daughter Mildred ten pounds to be paid vnto her out of the movable goods according to the appoyntmt of the overeers when ƒhe ƒhall have accompliƒhed the full age of 21 years or at the day of her marriage ƒhe marring with the conƒent of the overƒeers & her mother:further in caƒemy wife ƒhall marry whilƒt my children or either of them be vnder age by will is that my wife & her huƒband ƒhall both ƒtand bound to fullfill my will vnto my childlren according to the true intent thereof and that her huƒband ƒhall agree with my overƒeers for fullfilling of the ƒame in defect whereof or of the due vƒage of my childlren or wither of them my overƒeers ƒhall have power to diƒpoƒe of them by removing of them or otherwiƒe ƒoe as the may ƒee them ƒupplied & educated according to the true intent of this my laƒt will and Teƒtamt he or ƒhe paying according to the pporcon of the charge that ƒhall ƒoe ariƒe about the children And further my will is that my wife ƒhall not remove both or either of my children out of this Jurisdiccon without the conƒent of my overƒeers ffinally I doe make Sarah my loving wife ƒole executrix of this my laƒt will & Teƒtamt deƒiring her to ƒee all things therein to be pformed according to my Intent & meaning therein ƒpecified as alƒoe I doe appoynt our reverend & faithfull Teacher mr. John Norton & Robert Payne overƒers of this my laƒt will & Teƒtamt and incaƒe of the deceaƒe or departure of either or both of them I give either or both of them power to appoynt an other or others in his or their place or places
