Will of John Pike, Sr.

The will of John Pike, sr., of Salisbury was proved in the Hampton court 3:8 mo: 1654. The following copy is taken from the record in Old Norfolk Deeds, volume I, leaf 35, the original being missing.

In ye name of God Amen

The last will and testament of John Pike sen being sick & weake in body butt of pfect memory may ye 24th 1654.

Imp I will & bequeath my Soule vnto God in ye Lord Jesus christ & my body to bee buring in Convenient burying place & my worldly goods to bee bestowed as followeth.

first I giue my house & land att ye old towne att Nubery both upland and meadow wth my privilidg of Comon att Nubery vnto my grandchild John Pike ye sonn of my eldest Sonne John Pike wth yt pcell of my land att ye little river, and in case the said John Pike doe die wthout issue & before he is twenty one yeare old then the said land shall pass to ye next of kinn.

2 Also I giue that portion of my land at ye new towne called by the name of the pitt both vpland & meadow vnto my grandchilde John Pike the Sonn of my sonne Ribert Pike, & in case the said John Pike die without issue or before the age of twenty one the said Land shall pass to his sisters & if they saile then it shall pass to ye next of kinn.

3 Also I giue to my daughter Dorethie twenty pounds to bee equally devided betwixt hir & hir childeren by equall portions.

4 Also I give to my daughter Ann twenty pounds to be divided betwixt hir & hir childeren by equall portions

5 Also I giue to my daughter Israell twenty pounds to be divided betwixt hir & hir childeren by equal portions

6 Also I giue to my daughter in law the wyfe of my Sonne John fortie shillings & i giue to hir childeren Joseph Hanna Mary & Ruth each of them forty shillings

7 Also I giue vnto my daughter in law Sarah ye wyfe of my Sonne Robert forty shillings & I giue to hir childeren Sarah Dorathie mary & Elizabeth each of them forty shillings. also I giue vnto my Tenant Samuell More the bedstead the he hath of mine.

8 Also I doe apoint my two Sonns John & Robert to bee my Executors to see my will pformed ||& my debts and all charges paid|| so farr as my estate will reach & the remainder of my estate within dore & without dore shalbe divided betwixt my two said Executors my Sonns, John Pike and Robert Pike by equall portions all debts & charges being first discharged & paid

ffarthermore my will is that in case my Sonns John Pike & Robert Pike should remoue out of the contry wth their families after my decease befoare my said Grand childeren are of ye age of twenty one yeare that then it shalbe in the power of my said Sonns John & Robert to dispose in ye way of Sale or otherwaies of ye said land for ye benefit of my said grand childeren respectiuely that is to say my Sonn that is, the father shall dispose of yt land which is by me giuen to his owne childe, & fo both respectiuely.

Inventory of estate of John Pike, sen., deceased May 26, 1654, taken May 29, 1654 by Henry Mondey, John Ralfe (his EJ mark) and George Goldwyer (his o mark).

House and land at old town in Newbury; land at new town; etc. Total amount £230 6s/ 10d. Sworn to by the executors.

Dorothy, daughter of abovesaid John Pike, and wife of Daniell Hendrick of Haverhill, acknowledged the receipt of her legacy, etc., June 10, 1654. Wit: Robert Clements and Henry Palmer

Same, of Israel, daughter of said John Pike, and wife of Henry True of Salisbury, May 1, 1655. She acknowledged it May 1, 1655, and he 15:9:1655, before Tho:Bradbury, commissioner of Salisbury.
