Sarah was still alive apparently in 1660, as a Margaret Kingsbury
of Dedham
refers to her in her will as Sarah Crosseman, the wife of Robert Crosseman,
of Taunton, and bequeaths £5 within three "moneths after my deccase."
(New
England Historical & Genealogical Register, 11:40, Abstracts of Early
Wills.)
Mercy Hoskins, may have been a descendant of the original
William Hoskins whose son William moved to Taunton.
If Torrey (Marriage Before 1700) is correct, it would seem that all of these
children were by his first wife Sarah, as he didn't remarry until about 1687.
(Bristol County Probate Records, NEHGR 63:130) On June 29, 1696, several men of Taunton
are commissioned by the Judge of Probate to make an equal
division of the estate left by Robert Crossmen, late of Taunton, deceased,
divided between his sons and daughters: John, the eldest, half a south
purchase which he had in his possession before his father's decease, six
acres of land near Taunton Training place, etc.; Also mentioned are Robert
the second son, Sarah Woodward, Mary Gould, Elizabeth Hayward. To son's
Joseph's (noted as deceased) children a bequest. To Samuel Crossman, the
youngest son and to Marcey Thresher, the youngest daughter, a bequest
NEHGR 57:333: (Notes & Queries) Robert Crosman (sic) was an apprentice of
Joseph Kingsbury, housewright, Dedham, and married May 25, 1652, his
daughter Sarah, who bore him twelve children. He apparently removed to
Taunton abt May, 1655, when he is granted land there
NEHGR 62:233: (Bristol Co. Probate Records) An agreement made Dec. 7,
1687, says that Robert Crosman of Taunton promises to give to Martha Eatton
of Bristol widow during her life " (she being forthwith to be my maried
wiffe) all the lands I bought of Capt. Foster of Dorchester with all
buildings . . .with half a purchase right, all situate in Taunton lying
between land of John Dean . . . and all goods and chattels during her life,
one half to be at her absolute disposal at her death.
Also, same page, and next : Inventory of the estate of Robert Crossman
senior of Taunton, dec'd, taken Oct 27, 1692 by James Leonard and Thomas
Dean. Amount l35:19:01. Mentions that the widow is too aged and infirm to
come to Bristol, and requests Mr. Leonard to administer in her behalf.
(Note the discrepancy in the dates again--this 1692 has him as deceased by
this time)
