bullet Jerusha BRUCE was born on 29 Oct 1721 in Marlborough, MA. (363)(364) Parents: Samuel BRUCE and Elizabeth TOWNSHEND.

bullet John (2) BRUCE was born about 1667 in Marlborough, MA. (365) As John was listed in the Andros Tax List for 1688, he would have been at least twenty-one, which at least gives us a point of reference. He could have been older, but no younger. He was living in Jun 1710 in Framingham, MA.(366) He died about 1739 in Framingham, MA.(367) John's birthplace and parents are not yet irrevocably identified. . For purposes here and with more probability than other alternatives, he is attached to Thomas Bruce with caution, as he may have been a contemporary, rather than son. It is even possible that the Woburn, Sudbury and Marlboro Bruces had common origin in original emigrants or English families, but to date there is no data to support this. A 1982 abstract by Fahey et all (NEHGR), clarifies several questions (See Below).

This Bruce, (1667) as a paternal ancestor, is however clear. Whether born in Marlborough, Sudbury, Woburn, or of which parents, he married Elizabeth and had numerous children as outlined in this genealogy and listings in Framingham vital records--one of whom, John Jr. is traced directly to later family lines.

Births in Framingham: NEHGR, 1982, Fahey et all, Thomas Bruce of Sudbury and Marlborough," John2 Bruce, was born about 1667, assuming he was age 21 when included on the 1688 Andros Tax List. He married Elizabeth ______, who died probably in 1739, aged sixty-five (Barry, Framingham). They resided at Framingham where their nine children were born. On a tax list of 27 June, 1710, to procure a stock of ammunition, John Bruces was listed for L0.1.4.(Temple, Framingham, 164).

Other families bearing children in Framingham from about 1698-1766 by the name of Bruce were Ephraim, Elijah, Roger and Elizabeth, Benjamin and Abigail, Elisha and Mary, David of Southboro--with John and Roger (assumed to be his brother) being the earliest names appearing. (Framingham VR)

Fahey et all:

New England Register, 1982, Fahey et all: In brief, an article published in 1982, by the New England Register, entitled "Thomas Bruce of Sudbury and Marlborough," p. 294-306, reveals information previously unavailable through town records, and clearly establishes the following: Roger Bruce was the son of Thomas, not John, and that John was possibly a son of this same Thomas, and is so included in this article. The source records for Thomas's children, however, seem somewhat under documented, other than for Roger and David, both mentioned in wills and or court proceedings. Neither John nor Thomas are mentioned by Thomas in any documentation that has yet revealed itself. The only contemporaneous mention of John of Sudbury and Marlborough is revealed through this article when Thomas Bruse Senr, Thomas Bruse Junr, and John Bruse are listed in the Andros Tax List of 1688 for Marlborough ("Taxes under Gov. Andros [From the Jeffries Family Papers]," Register, 36 [1882]:192.)

Misc. Bruce Mentions:

Savage mentions: George Brush (Bruce) of Woburn (mentioned elsewhere as being here as early as 1634--see other references) Bruce, James of Haverhill; 1677; Bruce,John of Sudbury with children by 1672; Bruce, Peter of Haverhill; 1677; Bruce, Roger of Marlboro (children listed) Bruen, John, New London, s. of Obadiah Bruen, Obadiah, Gloucester who settled Marshfield, moved across the bay, back to New London, and listed as the youngest son of John B. Esq of Bruen, Stapleford, Cheshire.

Other early Johns (Various genealogies) include John, son of George of Woburn, George "Brush," later identified as "Bruce" being early there in Woburn., above; John above as father of Roger Bruce (contested, see Fahey) and both John, above and Roger, as son of Thomas Bruce of Sudbury, likely there as early as 1677 being called Thomas "Brewes", later copied as "Brewer".

The Woburn John's seemed to have stayed in the Woburn area until about 1740, when John and his son William come to Marlboro. There are several John's and Thomas' mentioned in Woburn history as late as 1775, I suspect, of John, son of George who married Rose Wattle and later Isobel Leppingwell. In fact, it seems increasingly probable that John of Sudbury, Marlboro, is either a brother or kinsman of Thomas Sr. or his son, and that while there is no proven early connection to George Bruce of Woburn, they variously could have been kinsman who settled apart from one another.

Hudson, Charles, History of Marlborough, Boston, 1862, References: In general Hudson introduces the Bruce lines with some confusion saying that the "Bruces of Marlborough probably had different ancestors," and later mentioning a John (1740) who came from Woburn. " and settled where the late Dea. Ezekiel Bruce resided." He refers to this John Bruce and suggests others as follows: "There was another family of Bruces which came to Marl. from Woburn, where there were many of that name, several of whom intermarried with the Marl. families."

Hudson's genealogy starts with Roger and mentions him as a probable son of John with no further reference to this John(2). His other reference to John is the John, above, from Marlboro, whose descendants seem to bear no resemblance to known family lines.

Other Bruces found within the historical documentation are: 1677: Samuel "Bush" is among Marlborough men petitioning the general court at the close of Phillips War. 1749: In a meeting of the town, Major John Bruce is among those committeemen appointed to resolve a school issue.

1764: (Warnings) A John Bruce gave notice to the Selectmen of his taking into his house Lucy Barney (s?) on the 26th of June 1764. Came last from Sudbury: and she is warned and cautioned as the law directs. 1770 :John Bruce, William Bruce (Hudson calls him son to John of Woburn) and Samuel Bruce 1775: Roll of Capt. How's Company: Nathaniel Bruce, Timothy Bruce, James Bruce. 1775: Eight Month Men: Obadiah Bruce 1777: Continental Army: James Bruce

A spy or deserter from Burgoyne's army was found in hiding under the stairs of this tavern.

Barry's history of Framingham says: John Bruce was among the men engaged in their country's cause." He served in the last of the Indian wars. His name appears in Capt. Brown's muster roll, alarm of 177, also Col Williard's regiment, 1756 in expedition to Crown Point. He was Sergeant in Col Barret's regiment and marched in response to an alarm, April 1755, and again in 1757.

He and his wife Mary were members of the Congregational Church in Brookfield. He and his wife die within a month of each other in 1785, with her death coming a few weeks after the premature death of her son Charles at age 31. It was this son, his youngest who held grant 30 , as well as the Bruce Tavern, which is next found on the records in the name of Nathan Moore, second husband to Charles' wife Mercy Gilbert Bruce.

Roger Bruce was born possibly about 1670 and is stated to have died 16, December, 1733, (Vital Records, Southborough, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849, [Worcester, Mass, 1903], but his will was signed 8 Dec. 1733 and proved 7 Feb. 1733/4 [Worcester County, Massachusetts, Probate, Series A, file 8553]. He does not appear with John Bruce on the 1688 Andros Tax List. About 1690 he married Elizabeth Forbush. The author above suggests that he may have been living in the household of his father at the time.

He came with his parents from Sudbury to Marlborough and was living there in 1691 when his first child was born. In 1695 he removes to Framingham, returning to Marlborough by 1701. During the next fifteen years, there is no clear record of him, but it is assumed he, for the major part, operated the mills at the original site. In 1711 he has a child born in Southborough. Roger's will disposed of his possessions to living children, not mentioning Rebecca and Deliverance, thus they were probably deceased. Samuel was not mentioned, however he had received land earlier.
