John WINSLOW was born on 22
May 1669 in Boston, MA. (2387)(3409)
He died on 1 Jan 1694/95.(146) It is interesting
to note that in his early will, he refers to his mother Judith, rather than Elizabeth, who
according to existing sources was his birth mother? It is further interesting to note that
there is a span of four years between his birth and that of his sister Elizabeth in 1665.
Parents: John WINSLOW and Elizabeth.

John WINSLOW was born on 22
May 1669.(146) He died on 1 Jan 1694.(1876) John4, who wrote his will in 1690, proved in 1695,
mentions going to war in his majesty's service and his mother, Mrs. Judith Winslow. One
wonders why, if his mother was Elizabeth, he would name Judith as his mother unless she
died while he was quite young. She is, according to MFIP, alive in 1670, but no death date
is given. For John Winslow to have remarried, as Savage suggests, in about 1672-3, we
could make a guess that Elizabeth was by then dead, making John Jr. a very young child
when his father remarried to Judith, and it would be she who raised him from near infancy.
He was married to Abigail ATKINSON in 1689 in Boston, MA.(146)

Judith WINSLOW was born about
1672 in Bridgewater, MA?. (3410) Probably Boston,
Bridgewater or Taunton. Based on her age at death, as being in 90th year. She died before
18 Dec 1761 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co, MA.(3411)
She was buried in Old Graveyard, Bridgewater.(3412)
This is a controversial issue, and is listed with temerity!
Although Judith is frequently cited as being the daughter of John Winslow's second wife,
Judith, The volume "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations", VOL II, edited
by Robert M. Sherman, on Chilton , More, Rogers, contends otherwise: "*The Mayflower
Society has accepted lineages through a purported daughter Judith. No evidence has been
found to substantiate this claim of a daughter Judith born to John and Judith Winslow, as
reported in FAMS OF PILGRIMS and in COL. FAMS OF AMERICA 1:56; nor has the Judith Winslow
who married Taunton 1688 John Packer been identified." (Also see comments under John
Winslow and wife Judith _____)
In Temple's History of North Brookfield, P. 78, he lists a dau. Judith (no birth date) of
Samuel (3) son of Kenelm(2) (1) and third wife, Ruth Briggs: Other children listed were
Mary Elizabeth; Ann Thomas; Kenelm, b. Rochester, Feb. 2 1712-13; and the above Judith,
who if born this late, would not be appropriate as a possible Judith.
Savage says John Winslow marries Judith (no date) but d. early, mak. his will in October
of 1683 "pro(bated) nine days after, as in vol VI. 435 . . ."

PLLPS says "Judith Winslow b. 1672 Taunton, Bristol MA, p. John Winslow & Judith

Parents: John WINSLOW and Judith UNKNOWN.
She was married to John (2) PACKARD on 12 Apr 1688 in
Taunton, Bristol, MA.(3413) It is interesting to
note the age discrepancy in these two. If dates are correct, he was considerably older
than she, both living long lives, but she outliving him by some 20 years. it does appear
that he was unmarried at the time of his father's death in 1684, as no mention of wife or
children are made for him, though several references are made to other children, their
husbands and their children. See Samuel's will.

John WITT was born about 1620
in England?. This is highly speculative. He was in Lynn, MA by then, one child, Thomas
noted as being born in 1651 there, with others later. Torrey also suggests this date. He
died in 1675 in Lynn, MA (prob). (3427)(3428) This is a placekeeper for the first known Witt
ancestor, placed with Sarah as she is likely a descendant or close relative.
A John Witt is among those petitioning the court of Boston for a plantation at Groton, 25
May, 1655. NEHGR 14:48 "The Petition for Groton Plantation." He was among those
chosen as Selectman for two years. He was thus at least 21 years of age.
Torrey P. 832 says ____ 1st wife, married about 1638.
2nd wfe Sarah ____, before 1643 in Lynn/Groton.
NEHGR 141:20: "Sarah, widow of John Witt," discusses the family and his will of
Sept 12, 1675, in which he mentions wife Sarah, daughter Sarah, who "presumably"
was by then married, as among the heirs. Sarah is referred to as the "now
mother" of John and Thomas, indicating they they were of his first marriage, however
this distinction was not applied to Sarah. Widow Sarah is later found to be living in
Wenham with her daughter Mary, who married Samuel Kimball.
John is noted (NEHGR 5:342 "Genealogical Items Relating to Lynn, Mass." as
having wife Sarah, and Children being born noted as Martha, 1659, Thomas, 1651, Ebenezer,
1665.
Another John (apparently his son--see marriage notes) marries Elizabeth Baker in 1676 and
has children noted as Elizabeth, John and Mary. There are, in fact, no Sarah's listed for
any of the Witts for Lynn in this brief excerpt. A Jonathan is there, as well as Joshua,
indented under John and Elizabeth.
In an Ayres genealogy NEHGR 17:310, An Elizabeth Witt, dau. of John Witt marries in 1703,
John Goodale(3) of Brookfield.
He was married to Sarah UNKNOWN 2nd wfe after 1651/52 in
Lynn MA ?. (3429)(3430) (3431) The marriage date is a placekeeper to tentatively
track descendants and purely speculative. Sarah is noted by Torrey as being second wife.
John's will suggest that John and Thomas were of his first marriage. Thus Thomas, stated
to be born in 1651, suggests a second marriage after this date.
Hudson's History of Marlboro P473-4) gives John Witt as in Lynn in 1640, and having two
wives, noting that his record of the Witt family are very "imperfect."
He further notes that he had several daughters and at least two sons, John and Thomas. He
also says John Jr. marries Elizabeth Baker in Lynn, adding that some of his children are
not recorded. Those included are Elizabeth, 1677, John, June 3, 1679 (m. Mary (Handwritten
in is Dane)) Jonathan, Samuel, Mary and last mentioned Thomas. This family seems about
right for Sarah who marries Ephraim Potter.
The John Witt who came to Marlboro, above and who marries Mary Dane?, came to Marlboro
about 1707, left a will proved May 16, 1743 which mentions wife Mary, sons William, Elias,
Joseph, John, Ebenezer, dau. Mary Dike, dau. Elizabeth, and grand dau. Rebecca Goodale.
Children were: John WITT Jr (P), Thomas
WITT, Sarah WITT, Mary WITT.
He was married to Unknown UNKNOWN about 1638 in Lynn, MA.(3432)
![]()
John WITT Jr (P) was born
about 1650 in Prob Lynn, MA. Speculative! His brother Thomas is born in 1651, and this
assumes that as a namesake child, he was born earlier than Thomas. Definitely speculative.
More to attach Sarah to this generation, as she was almost surely a descendant of John
Witt the emigrant. Parents: John WITT and Sarah UNKNOWN 2nd wfe.
He was married to Elizabeth BAKER on 14 Jan 1676 in Lynn, MA.(3433) Children were: Sarah WITT.
![]()
Mary WITT(1714) (3434) was born
about 1656 in Lynn MA ?. Placekeeper that she was approx. 20 when married. dau. of John
and Sarah (______) Witt of Lynn, MA. Parents: John WITT and Sarah UNKNOWN 2nd wfe.
She was married to Samuel(3) KIMBALL Ensign on 20 Sep 1676.(3435) (3436) See photo Witt, Mary. Under Witt, she is listed as same date, but in November, and also there called, "Marah". Children were: Samuel(4) KIMBALL.
![]()
Sarah WITT(3437) was born about 1688 in Lynn, MA.(2309) (372) Placekeeper
date assuming she was about 20 when married. John Witt as father is not proved! He is
listed, primarily because it is reasonable that she was a descendant of the first John
Witt--see notes, and it assists in following this family until more is known. Sarah's
marriage date of 1708 suggests that she may be the dau. of the John Witt who marries
Elizabeth Baker in 1676 or another of the descendants/relatives of John Witt. If she were
about 20 when married, she would have been born in 1688 or so, well after the first John
Witt had deceased. Thomas, brother to John Witt, married in 1675, within a year of his
brother, Bethia Potter, and could also be a potential father for Sarah. John Jr.'s
descendants, however, are those found in Marlboro, along with the Ephraim Potter family.
Thomas is not mentioned in the Marlboro history as having been there. Parents: John WITT Jr (P) and Elizabeth BAKER.
She was married to Ephraim POTTER on 23 Nov 1708 in Lynn MA ?.(290) (3438) Children were: Mary POTTER, Martha POTTER, Joseph POTTER, Persis POTTER, Ephraim POTTER Jr., Sarah POTTER, Theolpholis POTTER, Elizabeth POTTER.
![]()
Sarah WITT was born about
1655 in Lynn, MA.(3439) The NEHGR [141:19-20]
articles only discusses Sarah as among the heirs of John, giving no birth date, and
stating that she was by the date of his will probably married. Thus she was likely at
least 20 years of age. Given her name, it also seems likely that she was named for his
second wife, Sarah. Parents: John WITT and Sarah UNKNOWN 2nd wfe.
