John (1) WASHBURN was born
about 1566 in Bengeworth, Wor, England. (3015)(3016) Washburn Family Foundations: "John Washbourne
was the son of the preceding John Washbourne, and, there seems no reasonable doubt, was
born of his father's first marriage, to Joan Bushell, which took place 21 April 1542; and,
probably, was the unnamed male Washbourne child baptized in Bengeworth Church, 1 August
1556."
John (1) in this genealogy references the first John Washburn as being the Father of the
first founder in America. According to the Washburn Family Foundations volume, he would
have been XI in the line. This John and his brother William of Long Island are, according
to the volume, the founding fathers of the Washburn line in America. The defining proof of
the relationship between these two, is, I believe still in question
Seth Washburn's Justice of the Peace Book (MD 2:66+)
"My grate grandfather was own of the first Settelers in New England his name was John
Washbourn he had two brouthers came over with him one of shear names was Philip and one
Setteled in yorck State but I dont know his name. " He died on 4 Aug 1624 in
Worcester, England. (3017) Will dated 4 August,
1624, and was probated at Worcester, on 26 February, 1624 by his son, John Wasbourne. The
modern date would have been 26 February, 1625.

John (2) WASHBURN was born
about 1597 in Bengeworth, Wor, England. (3019) He
died about 1672 in Duxbury, MA. (3020) Washburn
Family Foundations: "It is indicated tht John Washburn . . . died in Duxbury,
Massachusetts (then in Plymouth Colony), in or soon after 1672. He emigrated prob 1632
from Plymouth, Mass.. (3021) "The earliest
record of John Washburn in Plymouth Colony is that of January 2, 1633, when he brought
suit against Edward Doty there."
"It has been conjectured by writers on the family that John Washburn, husband of
Margery Moore, was the John Washburn who was Secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Company,
but, as Mr. Davenport says, ""there seems no evidence for the supposition that
these two Johns were identical, or that the Secretary came from the Bengeworth
neighbourhood."" John Washburn who married Margery Moore was Churchwarden of
Bengeworth parish in 1625, and signed the transcript for that year. The signature of the
Secretary (John Washburn) in 1628 "bears not the slightest resemblance" to that
of John Washburn of Bengeworth.
Washburn, John
John Washburn was in Plymouth Colony at least as early as 2 January 1632/33, when he sued
Edward Doty (PCR 1:6). He came from Bengeworth, near Evesham, County Worcester, where he
was baptized 2 July 1596, the son of John and Martha (Timbrell) (Stephens) Washburn; he
married 23 November 1618 Margery Moore (parish records, p. 47-48 of James Davenport, The
Washburne Family of Little Washburne & Wichenford in the County of Worcester [London,
1907]). John's family later joined him in Plymouth, and they are shown by Hotten, p. 57,
to have sailed on the Elizabeth, which left England for New England on 13 April 1635 with
certificates from the mayor of Evesham: Margerie Washborn, age forty-nine, and her two
sons John Washborne, age fourteen, and Philip Washborne, age eleven. Margery (Moore)
Washburn was baptized at Bengeworth 3 November 1588, the daughter of Robert and Ellen
(Taylor) Moore (Davenport, p. 51).
Davenport supports the claim of some American Washburn descendants that John Washburn is a
descendant of the Washburns of Wichenford, who have a proven royal line; however, he
offers no valid evidence, and the claim must be considered unproved and probably false.
E. A. B. Barnard, Some Notes on the Evesham Branch of the Washbourne Family [p.369]
(Evesham, 1914), points out that there were Washburns in the neighborhood of Evesham
centuries before a descendant of the Wichenford family is claimed to have moved there.
Numerous errors have appeared on the Washburn family, such as the claim that the immigrant
John Washburn was identical with the John Washburn who was the secretary in England of the
Plymouth (England) Company until 1628, which Davenport denies, pointing to handwriting
specimens of each, and noting that the Plymouth immigrant was a churchwarden in Bengeworth
as recently as 1625. It is, however, possible that William Washburn, who died on Long
Island in 1659, might have been either a brother or cousin to the immigrant John Washburn;
see Davenport, p. 54, and John G. Hunt, "Clues to Origin of Washburne
of
Hempstead, L.I., etc.," TAG 36:62-64.
In Plymouth Colony John Washburn moved from Plymouth to Duxbury and became a freeman on 2
June 1646. He and his two sons were in the 1643 ATBA list from Duxbury. He served in
various minor capacities, as shown in PCR volumes. On 3 June 1662 he was granted what
appears to be a double portion of land at Saconnet (Little Compton) by virtue of his being
both an ancient freeman and a former servant, though the records do not indicate to whom
he was a servant (PCR 4:18; this would certainly seem to refute any claim that he had been
secretary of the Plymouth Company). There is no record that he lived in Saconnet, but he
moved from Duxbury to Bridgewater sometime after 26 May 1666. George E. Bowman,
"Washburn Notes," MD 15:247-53, 16:248-53, helps sort out some of the
misconceptions about the early Washburns, and he shows (16:248) that John, Sr. must have
died shortly before 17 March 1670/71. Inasmuch as John's son John had all his children by
his first wife, a Mayflower descendant, and John's son Philip's only son, John3, married
as his only wife a Mayflower descendant, there is a strong presumption that thereafter all
Washburns in colonial Plymouth are probably Mayflower descendants.
MD:16:4: WASHBURN NOTES
As previously stated, John1 Washburn of Duxbury had two sons, John2 and Philip2. Both of
these sons lived for a time in Duxbury, and then moved to Bridgewater. John2 Washburn
married, first, Elizabeth Mitchell3 (Jane2 Cooke, Francis1), and, second, Elizabeth
() Packard, widow of Samuel1 Packard of Bridgewater. Philip2 Washburn married
Elizabeth2 Irish (John1), and survived her many years.
In the following pages are printed careful abstracts of conveyances recorded in the
Plymouth Colony Deeds, in the Plymouth County, Mass., Deeds and in the Bristol County,
Mass., Deeds, and of two entries in the town records of Bridgewater, Mass.
The deed made in 1664 proves that John2 Washburn's first wife was the daughter of
Experience Mitchell.
The deeds made in 1666 and 1679 prove that John1 Washburn was the father of Philip2
Washburn, of Duxbury and Bridgewater, and that John1, the father, died between these two
dates.
The deed made in 1670 proves that John2 Washburn of Bridgewater was formerly of Duxbury,
and by the two changes of "Junr" to "senir", indicates that his father
died about the time the deed was drawn. Elizabeth (Mitchell) Washburn signed this deed
with her husband. Parents: John (1) WASHBURN and Martha (Trimbrell) STEVENS .
He was married to Margery MOORE on 23 Nov 1618 in

Now put to rest by a subsequent articles in NEHGR and TAG, NEHGR 115:83
questioned a marriage to Rebecca Lapham and the accuracy of Bridgewater VR to 1850, which
gives marriage and cemetery information for this marriage. This study, proposed her to be
possibly the wife of Samuel White who was born (or baptized) on the same day as she and
and whose wife Rebecca is believed to have died in 1711. While the articles does not
conclude that Rebecca Lapham was not John's wife, it asks for the conclusion that Rebecca
Lapham as John's wife is not proven.
While this is of interest academically, Mayflower descent flows through John Washburn, and
thus does not disprove Mayflower heritage through John. Children were: Josiah(5) WASHBURN, John Jr. (5) WASHBURN,

Mitchell3 (Jane2 Cooke, Francis1). He married, second, between 1684 and 1686, Elizabeth (
) Packard, widow of Samuel1 Packard of Bridgewater. As all of John's children were by the
first wife, the discovery of a second wife does not affect any claim of descent from
Francis1 Cooke of the Mayflower
Washburn, John
The son of John and Margery (Moore) Washburn (see father for additional pertinent
information), the younger John Washburn was baptized at Bengeworth, County Worcester, on
26 November 1620, and he arrived at Plymouth with his mother and brother, Philip, in 1635.
He married (1) on 6 December 1645 Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of Experience and Jane
(Cooke) Mitchell (PCR 2:94). Bowman shows (MD 15:247) that he married (2) between 1684 and
1686 Elizabeth (_____) Packard, widow of Samuel Packard, but he had no children by her.
His children by his first wife have sometimes been confused to include those of his
brother Philip, q.v. John was probably the John Washburn (rather than his father) who was
sent from Duxbury in the campaign against the Narragansetts in August 1645 (PCR 2:90). He
was made a freeman on 6 June 1654 (PCR 3:48), and became a constable of Duxbury 7 June
1659 (PCR 3:163).
He dated his will 30 October 1686, sworn 14 September 1687, and he named his wife
Elizabeth; sons John, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, Jonathan, Benjamin, and James; and his
daughters Mary, Elizabeth and "her [p.370] husband," Jane, and Sarah (MD
15:248).

Notes:
The exact dates of the children's' births are in slight discrepancy between the Washburn
Family Foundations Genealogy, and that of another researcher referenced: Mr. Goodell.
There are also a total of four daughters according to this source, only two of which are
found here through other sources. They are not mentioned by name in the Washburn
Genealogy.
According to Wood MF5G:12, James Washburn is the only one of 11 children for whom a birth
record was found. The rest are identified by way of wills and other records. He gives a
total of 11 children 7 sons and four daughters, all of whom are living when he writes his
will in 1686.
A deed made in 1681 is of especial importance, as it was acknowledged on 1 November, 1681,
by "John Washborne Senr .... in ye behalfe of himselfe & Elizabeth his wife"
This is the latest mention of Elizabeth (Mitchell) Washburn I have found on the records.
She had died and her husband had married again before 30 October, 1686, when he made his
will.

In September 102 Jonathan Washbourne Jr, of Bridgewater, was ordered to pay a fine of L5
"fees and charges" or be publicly whipped 20 stripes for "his abusive and
uncivil behavior to Elizabeth Canaday late of Bridgewater by thrusting up or putting of a

MD 2:70 Col Seth Washburn's Justice of the Peace Book:
Bowman Comments:
Mitchell, in his history of Bridgewater, leaves in doubt which of several Joseph Washburns
went from Bridgewater to Leicester to live. The jottings regarding his father's family,
which Seth Washburn put down in the old Justice of the Peace book, settle this point.
The Joseph Washburn who went to Leicester was the Joseph whose father had the seven sons,
Jonathan, Joseph, Ebenezer, Miles, Ephraim, Edward, and Benjamin. Mitchell gives these
seven sons, in different order, to the Joseph Washburn who married Hannah Latham,
granddaughter of Mary (Chilton) Winslow. These sons were the grandsons of John Washburn,
whom Seth Washburn speaks of as his "grate grand father."

BY THE EDITOR (G.E.B.)
Bowman Comments:
In the History of Bridgewater, by Nahum Mitchell, published in 1840, it is stated, on page
222, that Hannah Latham, daughter of Robert Latham, by his wife Susanna Winslow3 (Mary2
Chilton, James1), married "Joseph Washburn Jr." The addition of the
"Jr." was an error, as the Joseph who married Hannah Latham was the son of John
and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Washburn, and the grandson of John Washburn; and there was no
other Joseph Washburn, in Bridgewater, until the births of sons of that name to Joseph and
Hannah (Latham) Washburn and to Joseph's brother John.
Mitchell also states, on page 323, that the Joseph Washburn who married Hannah Latham
lived in Bridgewater, and that "It appears he was afterwards in Plymouth and Plympton
by deeds he gave in 1707, 1714, and 1720, in which his father Latham is mentioned:"
A careful search of the records in the Plymouth County, Mass., Registry of Deeds has
failed to disclose a single record to indicate that Joseph Washburn, Sr., at any time
lived in Plymouth; and only two deeds, dated 1706/7 and 1714, were found, in which Joseph
Washburn mentioned Robert Latham, his father-in-law.
There are other deeds on record, made by Joseph Washburn, Sr., in the year 1720, but they
do not contain any reference to Robert Latham.
On 17 April, 1717, Joseph Washburn, blacksmith, of Bridgewater, sold his home in that
place (To Isaac Lazell), his wife Hannah releasing her dower rights. [Plym. Co. Deeds, 12:
153.]
* "Senir" is crossed out, in the original record.
On 14 June, 1720, Joseph Washburn, blacksmith, of Plympton, formerly of Bridgewater,
confirmed the deed of 17 April, 1717, wife Hannah again releasing her dower rights. Both
Joseph and Hannah acknowledged the deed, on 1 July, 1725. [Plym. Co. Deeds, 19:98.]
On 12 August, 1721, Joseph Washburn, blacksmith, of Plympton, wife Hannah releasing dower
rights, conveyed land to son Jonathan Washburn of Bridgewater. [Plym. Co. Deeds, 15 :204.]
Exhaustive abstracts of the deeds of 1706/7 and 1714, in which Robert Latham 18 mentioned,
are here given.

He was married to Hannah JOHNSON in 1716 in Bridgewater,
BRISTOL, MA?. (3057)(3058)
The John Johnson genealogy gives Hannah as the second child of Isaac and Abigail.
Reference sources are given as Hingham, Mass, Vol II, p. 385, Journal of American
Genealogy, Vol II, 1st Quarter, p. 40, Sandwich Records, p. 284, History of Bridgewater
Mass, 2nd Edition 1897.
The marriage date of 1716 also comes from the Johnson Genealogy. They have her as marrying
Joseph, removing to Middletown, Conn. about 1739 and to Leicester, Mass. before 1745.
If this is a correct assumption it would be that Joseph married Hannah Johnson and his
sister Rebecca married David Johnson, sister and brother, and children of Isaac and
Abigail Leavitt Johnson. Not too far fetched.

Phillip WASHBURN was born in
1624 in Bengeworth, Wor, England. (3071) This
Phillip was the second of the name, the first having died shortly after Baptismal. He came
with his mother, John, in the Elizabeth And Ann, April 13, 1635. A sister Mary, the
eldest, appears to have been deceased by this time.
The deed made by Philip2 Washburn in 1679 shows that he had moved from Duxbury to
Bridgewater. It is interesting to note that this deed was not recorded until 1702, when
his children sued their uncle John2 Irish (John1).
Washburn, Philip
The son of John and Margery (Moore) Washburn (see his father for additional information),
Philip's baptism is not recorded at Bengeworth, but he was eleven years old when he
arrived in Plymouth with his mother and brother in 1635. Bowman gives (MD 16:248) two
deeds proving who Philip's father was. Unlike his brother John, Philip did not become a
freeman, and a Bridgewater town meeting record of 8 May 1685 (MD 16:249) shows that he was
incapable at that time of taking care of himself, and his nephew Joseph Washburn agreed to
take care of him. Philip's brother John had directed in his will that "my Son John
take Care of my Brother Phillip," and this is probably part of the reason why many
people (e.g., Davis, Savage, Mitchell) have stated that Philip had no children of his own.
The fact is, though, that Philip married late in life Elizabeth Irish, daughter of John
and Elizabeth Irish, and they had a son John, who married Lydia Billington, and daughters
Margery, who married Josiah Leonard; Mary, who married Daniel Pratt, and Elizabeth, who
married Joseph Amory (MD 15:247). Bowman (MD 16:249) refers to a 1702 lawsuit regarding
Philip's children's suit against their uncle John Irish. Proof that Philip had a son John
is found in Ply. Co. LR 10:1:466, in which John Washburn on 8 December 1708 sold land to
Samuel Bradford, "which my honored grandfather John Irish deceased" formerly
possessed. Philip was still living on 19 August 1700, when he was mentioned in a
Bridgewater town record (MD 16:253). Parents: John (2) WASHBURN
and Margery MOORE.

Rebecca WASHBURN(3072) died on 20 Apr 1764 in West Bridgewater, MA.(3073) (3074) Edsons In
England And America: "Their graves are in Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church
graveyard in Bridgewater." MF5G:12, says in "West Bridgewater."
Curiously:
Another death record P. 205 (West Bridgewater VR) has a wife of Capt. David, Bethia,
dying, April 20, 1764, in 67th year! Birth was thus about 1697 for this
"Bethia." She was born unknown in Bridgewater, MA.
(3075)(3076) Rebecca, as a child of Joseph is as
yet unproved, and she has previously been given to John 3--but whether of this Joseph or
another of the numerous Washburns, it is probable that she is of either Mayflower Chilton
or Cooke descent (perhaps both) through John Washburn. If she is Joseph's child as
suggested by MF5G:12, she has a dual line through both families through her mother Latham,
and her father's ancestor John Washburne. VOL 12 of MF5G, issued in 1996, includes her as
a possible child of Joseph and continues her lineage with the prefix (A).
If this relationship is correct, Rebecca's Washburn's brother , Joseph Washburn, marries
Hannah Johnson, sister to David Johnson, her new husband..
