bullet Judith UNKNOWN(2387) was born about 1625. (2387) MFIP gives her birth date as abt 1625 with a "?". At least one early Packard record (unsubstantiated), says John Winslow married Judith Smith. She died about 18 Dec 1714 in Boston, MA.(2939) She was buried in Boston, MA.(2940) Savage in referencing his second marriage to Judith says he dies early, and also attributes his known children to his first wife Elizabeth.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a Packard genealogy she is referred to as Judith Smith. It is interesting to note that Jael Packard sister to John Packard also marries earlier in Taunton a John Smith in 1672. Taunton records however clearly give John (Packer) Packard as having married Judith Winslow 1688.

How Many Winslows In The Colony?

It is interesting to note that there seem to be only five Winslow's coming to the new World between 1620 and 1650, so our potential for 2nd or 3rd generation Judith's are reasonably finite.

The Winslows:
They were: Edward, Gilbert (Mayflower) John in the Fortune, Josias on the White Angel and Kenelm before January 1632/3.

Scenario 1:

Contemporary Male Winslows who might have fathered Judith:

If she was married in 1688, Taunton, her latest possible birthdate would be about 1672, if we assume she was at the earliest -- 16 years of age when married, and died near 90 in Bridgewater in 1761.

In reviewing known births for the John Winslow and Mary Chilton progeny, it would appear that the only other Winslow that could have fathered Judith would have been brother Joseph who had unnamed children alive at a time early enough for Judith to have been 16 in 1688, or bro. Samuel mentioned in will.

John Winslow 2/Mary Chilton 2

Children:

John Winslow 3 b. bef 1630 --m. bef 1664 Elizabeth, then Judith. Only one male heir, John 4, born 1669 (it is said by wife Elizabeth) No children by name of Judith acknowledged by MFIP. Son, John 4 . b. abt 1669--too late for Judith, and did not marry until 1689, a year after Judith's marriage.

Brothers to John Winslow3

Brother Edward3 All known male children born too late to father Judith, the youngest male John, being born in 1661, and the only other male child Edward, being born in 1691. Savage mentions no Judiths, nor does MFIP, but Savage does mention "ano" d. whose name is "not in the fam. tradit. found, 31, July 1675."

Brother Samuel3 (m. abt 1675, thus any child would have been too young for 1688 marriage of Judith.

Brother Joseph3 Married ,it is believed, first, ________, bef. 1673, as he had two unnamed children living in 1673/4--ages unknown) he b. possibly abt1642. Another son Joseph was born in 1677, too late to have fathered Judith. He m. unknown wife, then 2nd wife by 1668. (Possible potential for Judith in the earlier two children)

Brother Isaac3 Only one child Parnill mentioned in will and then unborn child (Isaac) who died within a month or so of birth.

Unknown sibling3 Died before Judith's marriage date.

Brother Benjamin3: Died unmarried bet 20 and 26 years of age.

This then completes the known potential for Mary Chilton male descendants by the name of Winslow other than John3 who could father a Judith, and who would qualify as having the potential to have a child 16 years or more of age in 1688. Edward is a possibility via unnamed dau., as is Joseph with the two unnamed children alive in 1673.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Other Winslows:

Gov. Edward Winslow (Josiah only son who survived to grow up had Edward who died young and Isaac who wasn't born until 1670--too young for Judith. No girls by the name of Judith. .

-----------------------------
Gilbert (Returned to England aft 1st div. and died) Could have married and had children, but none acknowledged in sources

------------------------------------

Kenhelm1 Male children were Kenhelm, Son Job and Nathaniel-- all born too late to father Judith--nor were any female Judith's noted as born to Kenhelm1. (Temple (Brookfield study) notes a Samuel, son of Kenhelm (which Kenhelm is not known and numerous children, one of which is a Judith with no date.) She later appears to have been born about 1710.

---------------------------
Josiah Jonathan, only son b 1638, daus, but no Judiths. Jonathan had John, d. young in 1676, married, no children recorded.

------------------------RECAP: While any of the Brothers to Governor Edward
had the potential to have fathered a Judith, none are to be found, nor do there appear to be any of the male Winslows who married a Judith, other than John3. While Elizabeth's and Mary's are frequent, as well as dau's named for their mothers-- this name simply doesn't appear more than once in Winslow annals thus discovered. In retrospect it would seem that Judith could only have come from a second or early third generation Winslow to permit her to be of age to be married in 1688. The Winslows tended to die young, and to have a preponderance of female offspring.

So who is our Judith? We still don't know, but the signs thus far point to John3 as having the only easily available Winslow name of Judith at the right time.!

The Judith who marries John Packard seems to have been a mere 16 when marrying--he 32.
Unusual in itself, and subject to query, it also has to be noted that he lived to a ripe old age of 80 plus, with Judith outliving him by another 20 years. So, while improbable, it also parses.

Judith is Judith and she is dau of Winslow and Judith. He just fails to mention her in his will, because she is, after all, only a girl, and he has only one male heir, John. After all, he doesn't seem to mention dau. Elizabeth, either, nor Ann, who.may or not have been then alive. He may have simply assumed his wife would "take care of the girls," under the terms of her bequeathment. In fact, his only bequests are to the male children of of his brothers and sisters; the balance of his estate to wife Judith 1/3, John 2/3rds.

Depending on Judith's age, she may have had an unrecorded child, not uncommon in the Boston records of this period, as there is a substantial gap.

bullet Sarah UNKNOWN was born in 1679. She died on 25 Mar 1723 in Sudbury, Middlesex, MA.(1203) She has reference number 2nd Wife.

She was married to Captain John (5) GOODENOW in 1701. Sarah is his second wife, his first wife Ruth Willis, having died in 1701, and by whom he had four children. (Torrey, Marriages Prior 1700) Children by his first wife, Ruth, were John, Ruth, Abigail, Kezia. Children by Sarah were Eunis, Natham, Hannah, Lidiah, Aaron, Benjamin, Moses and Ephraim. Children were: Aaron GOODENOW.

bullet Sarah UNKNOWN 2nd wfe was born about 1630 in Lynn, MA?. Placekeeper date. Records do not indicate a prior marriage for Sarah, via John's will, so the assumption is that she was about 20 or more when married. She died after 1705 in Wenham, MA?.(2957) This was the date in which she last signed a legal document, and the last time of which she is heard--thus a placekeeper date. In this document she and a current husband (Edward Bragg) acquit and discharge any claims against the estate of John Reddington and son Daniel.

She was married to John WITT after 1651/52 in Lynn MA ?.(2958) (2959)(2960) The marriage date is a placekeeper to tentatively track descendants and purely speculative. Sarah is noted by Torrey as being second wife. John's will suggests that John and Thomas were of his first marriage. Thus Thomas, stated to be born in 1651, suggests a second marriage after this date.

Hudson's History of Marlboro P473-4) gives John Witt as in Lynn in 1640, and having two wives, noting that his record of the Witt family are very "imperfect."

He further notes that he had several daughters and at least two sons, John and Thomas. He also says John Jr. marries Elizabeth Baker in Lynn, adding that some of his children are not recorded. Those included are Elizabeth, 1677, John, June 3, 1679 (m. Mary (Handwritten in is Dane)) Jonathan, Samuel, Mary and last mentioned Thomas. This family seems about right for Sarah who marries Ephraim Potter.

The John Witt who came to Marlboro, above and who marries Mary Dane?, came to Marlboro about 1707, left a will proved May 16, 1743 which mentions wife Mary, sons William, Elias, Joseph, John, Ebenezer, dau. Mary Dike, dau. Elizabeth, and grand dau. Rebecca Goodale. Children were: John WITT Jr (P), Thomas WITT, Sarah WITT, Mary WITT.
