Jacob THOMPSON3 Esq was born
on 24 Apr 1662 in Plymouth or Barnstable, MA. (2876)
MD:24:4:171: Estate of Jacob Thompson
JACOB Tomson, son of Lieutenant John Tomson by His wife Mary2 Cooke (Francis1), was born
24 April, 1662, according to the Barnstable, Mass., records, and was married, 28 December,
1693, to Abigail Wadsworth, born 25 October, 1670, daughter of Deacon John and Abigail
(Andrews) Wadsworth, of Duxbury.
Jacob and Abigail (Wadsworth) Tomson had ten children, all recorded at Middleborough,
Mass., as follows: Jacob Tomson4, born 17 April, 1695; Abigail Tomson4, born 14 February,
1696/7; Mercy Tomson4, born 13 October, 1699; John Tomson4, born 19 March, 1700/1 ; Lydia
Tomson4, born 22 April, 1703; Barnabas Tomson4, born 28 January, 1704/5; Esther Tomson4,
born 18 February, 1706/7; Hannah Tomson4, born 10 March, 1708/9; Mary Tomson4, born 19
May, 1711; Caleb Tomson4, born 4 November, 1712.
Jacob Tomson, Esq., died at Middleborough, 1 September, 1726, in his 65th year, according
to the town records and his gravestone; and Abigail his widow died 15 January, 1744, in
her 75th year, according to Her gravestone, beside her husband's.
The foregoing births, marriages and deaths, from the original town and cemetery records,
will be found in the second, third, fifth, ninth and fourteenth volumes of this magazine.
Especial attention is called to these dates, because of the errors in "Descendants of
John Thomson", published in Detroit, Mich., in 1890. That book, unfortunately,
contains numerous serious errors in dates and names; and, with rare exceptions, neither
residences, nor places of birth, marriage and death are given, in the first few
generations.
Jacob Tomson3 died intestate, and the settlement of his estate shows that his wife and all
of his ten children survived him
The widow Abigail (Wadsworth) Tomson made her will* on 16 April, 1739, and all of the ten
children were then living.
[5 :230, 231] On 22 March, 1726/7, Caleb Tomson, Esther Tomson, Hannah Tomson and Mary
Tomson, children of "Jacob Tomson Esqr Late of middleborough", and all minors
between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one, chose "mr Thomas Tomson of middleborough
as their guardian, and the choice was allowed. Parents: John
THOMPSON and Mary COOKE .
Children were: Lydia THOMPSON, Abigal(4) THOMPSON.

and Alice (Biggs) Tilden. Background on his family is given in NEHGR 65:322, 75:226, and

(Huckstep), seven children, and seven servants. He settled in Scituate and he probably
died there between May and July 1641.
All the children of Nathaniel and Lydia Tilden were born in England, five dying there

married Thomas Lapham; Joseph, who died young; Sarah, who married George Sutton; Joseph,
who married Alice or Elizabeth Twisden; Stephen, who died young; Thomas, who married

70:256 that Lydia (Huckstep) (Tilden) Hatherly was a cousin of Thomas Hatch, q.v., who
also came to New England in the Hercules and settled at Scituate.
Tilden was of the gentry and addressed as "Mr.," and he was one of the wealthier
Scituate residents. He dated his will 25 May 1641, inventory 31 July 1641, and he named
his wife Lydia and his children Stephen; Lydia; Joseph; Thomas; Judith; Mary, the wife of
