bullet Thomas RICHARDS was born about 1590 in Dorechester, England?. He died about 1650/51.(2670) BY GEORGE ERNEST BOWMAN
THE wills of Thomas Richards of Weymouth, Mass., and his widow, Welthian Richards of Boston, will interest many descendants of Plymouth .Colony families, since their daughter Mary Richards was the first wife of Thomas2 Hinckley † (Samuel1), afterwards governor of Plymouth Colony, and bore him eight children, all but one of whom married. The daughter Alice Richards became the wife of William2 Bradford ‡ (Gov. William1) and bore him ten children, all of whom married.
The will of Thomas Richards was made at Hull, Mass., at the house of Thomas Loring, on 27 December, 1650, and the inventory of his goods at Weymouth was taken 18 January, 1650/1; he must, therefore, have died between these two dates;' None of the papers relating to his estate were recorded, and the following abstracts, with the literal copy of the petition of the heirs, were made from the original documents, now in the Suffolk County Probate Files in Boston.

[THE WILL OF THOMAS RICHARDS]
The will of Thomas Richards of Weymouth was made at the house of Thomas Loring, in Hull, Mass., 17 December, 1650, and was proved 28 January, 1652/1. Bequests were made to his wife; to son John, who is away from home; to son James; to son Samuel; to sons Joseph and Benjamin, both under twenty-one years of age; daughters mary and An and Alce and Hannah; shall have halfe so much as my sonnes; all alike" but Mary is to have £10 more than the others; "to Brother Thos Loringe." Son John, Thomas Loring and Nicholas Baker are to see that the will is carried out.
On 18 and 25 January, 1650/1, the goods at Weymouth, Mass., and Boston were inventoried.
On 28 January, 1650/1, the inventories were sworn to by Mrs. Richards. An account rendered by her mentions debts due to "mr ffermace of Plimouth," to Thomas Hinckley, to Ephraim Hunt and to Captain Standish of Duxbury.
On the same day the following petition of the heirs was presented to the court.
"To the Honoured Court at Boston: 28: (11) 1650
Wheras our deare father Mr Thomas Richards late of Waymouth: dyed and left a will but appoynted no executors of the same: We whose names are underwritten doe humbly desire this Honor Court that our deare Mother mrs Welthian Richards: late wife of our deare father deceased: may have power granted by this Court to improve the estate that our father left untill our Brother John Richards shall returne hether he being now in England: or in case of his not returninge untill the Court shall thinke good to dispose otherwise And that our dear Mother may returne an Inventory into this Court of the whole estate of our said father deceased and also be bound to give an account of the said estate upon all demands: That so the estate may be ordred for our good & the payment of our fathers debt: Thus not doubting of your fatherly care for the fatherlesse we humbly take leave

The Wills of Thomas and Welthian Richards 91
On 3 December, 1651, John Richards acknowledged himself satisfied with his mother's management of the estate.
Thomas Richards would appear to be of Dorchester, Eng, and came to New England in the 1630's, settling in Dorchester with Welthian and several children. According to a bio in NEHGR 23:29, he was a much respected merchant and bore the title of "Mr." He died between 1650 and 1651, the dates between which his will was executed and proven. He was the father of eleven children.

William, BRADFORD (Gov. William1), who is usually called "Major" William Bradford, married, first, Alice Richards of Weymouth, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Welthian Richards, but the date of the marriage is not known. The date of Gov. Bradford's marriage settlement on his son William, however, indicates that the ceremony was performed not far from 23 April, 1650; and it is certain that the marriage took place before 28 January, 1650/T, since William, Bradford joined in a petition of the heirs of Thomas Richards on that date.
This marriage settlement, although made on 23 April, 1650, was not recorded until 29 October, 1671, more than fourteen years after Governor Bradford's death, over a year and a half after his widow's death, and about six weeks before the death of Alice (Richards) Bradford. It is recorded in the Plymouth Colony Records of Deeds, Volume III, page 204.

He was married to Welthian LORING? p. about 1610 in England.(2671) While it's considered slightly bad form to use Torrey as a single source, rather than as a "source for sources," this remains a placekeeper until original records can be discovered. Children were: Anne RICHARDS.

bullet Elizabeth ROGERS(1729) was born in 1698 in Plymouth, MA.(2697) Mayflower Through Five Generations, Stephen Hopkins. Her parents acknowledge a deed in Plymouth 1739.

The author asks: "Did she m. 1722 Thomas Mayo?" She was born on 15 Nov 1698 in Plymouth Colony, MA. She died after 1750. (1744) MFIP, Rogers, does not know who she married, and wonders if it is a Mayo. Interestingly, Samuel Kimball who marries an Elizabeth Rogers in 1705 and his wife named their child the most unusual name of Ammiruhamah, the reverse maiden name of Ruhamah Ammi Willis Rogers.) wife of Eleazer. While is is improbable that these Elizabeth's would have been one and the same -- this Elizabeth would have been 36 and he 20 had they married when Samuel was designated to have married his Elizabeth, the name still strikes as unusual.
There are very few Ruhamah's to be found in early records. Is there an intervening or adjacent marriage clue? Parents: Eleazer ROGERS Mayflower Descendant and Ruhamah Ammi WILLIS.

bullet Elizabeth ROGERS Admitted to full communion Admitted in 1710 in Wenham, MA. (2698) This is a placekeeper. The Samuel is prob this Samuel's Father, and what Elizabeth is unsure. She was baptized in 1714 in Wenham, MA. (2699) She was born on 4 Oct 1714 in Wenham, MA. (2700)(2701) See baptismal record This is probably the daughter of William Rogers, a long time resident of Wenham. See other notes on this family.

The immediate tie that seems to bind is that Elizabeth is a known dau. of William Rogers; Elizabeth Rogers marries Samuel Kimball; Elizabeth and Samuel name one of their children William; Elizabeth Kimball is chosen as schoolteacher, perhaps following in her father's footsteps.

History of Wenham, p. 113: "In 1746 Mrs. Elizabeth Kimball was "approved" of and approbated to keep school in our town, to teach children and yuth to read and write, she having behaved in sober conversation." This appears to have been the first instance in which a female teacher was employed by the town. Parents: William ROGERS and Elizabeth PERKINS.

bullet John ROGERS (?) was born about 1634.(2714) Temporary assumption that he was at least 19 or 20 years of age to be listed as a settler, rather than son. He was living in 1695 in Wenham, MA. (2715) This John Rogers is an enigma. He is found in Wenham as early as 1653, were he is listed in Wenham's history as one of the earliest settlers. There are no other Rogers listed amongst these early settlers. While Wenham births list several of his children, no mention of a wife, by first name or otherwise is made. Nor is there a recorded marriage for John. We know that he had his last recorded (Wenham VR) child there in 1657, who was called Sarah. The one male child, Nathaniel listed in the vital records has no corresponding marriage record. Naming conventions in the VR for the Rogers, however, suggest strongly that the Wenham Rogers were closely related.

There seems as well to be a correlation in the family naming conventions to Rev. Nathaniel Rogers of Ipswich, son of John, and ascribed to be a lineal descendant of the Smithfield martyr. His children were named John, Nathaniel, Samuel, Timothy, Ezekiel. His eldest son John was a succeeding minister in Ipswich, marrying Elizabeth, daughter of Gen. Daniel Denison. Their children were Elizabeth, Margaret, John, Daniel, Nathaniel and Patience. However, so far, there is no direct evidence of a link. The Wenham Rogers name their children Nathaniel, William, John, Margaret & Elizabeth with some frequency.

What is known:
The first settlement of Wenham seems to have been about 1635, when it was parceled out of Salem, and was first known as Salem Village, as well as Enon. It was accorded township May 10, 1643 with the order that "Enon shalbee called Wennam." Thus, John Rogers arriving in 1653 settled some 10 years after its official designation as a town. Beyond the birth of several children, there is nothing known about him. He simply does not appear in any records thus discovered, other than through his assumed progeny. The only male child attributed to John is Nathaniel who has a son William. There is, however, another William of about the same age bearing children in Wenham, so the William Rogers we are seeking might be a son of Nathaniel, a brother to Nathaniel, or a close relative. We simply don't know at this point.

William Rogers, as well as a John and Daniel Gould are among early settlers of Reading and South Reading (NEHGR 2:47)

D. Hamilton Hurd, II, Philadelphia, J. W. Lewis & Co. 1888. (Wenham excerpt) p. 1241: In 1706 William Rogers was appointed schoolmaster, succeeding Captain Thomas Fiske who, it is thought, kept the school at his home. Mr. Rogers was reappointed in 1710 and in 1718-19 Rogers and Daniel Dodge were chosen to keep school. In 1746, an Elizabeth Kimball was "approved of and approbated to keep school in our town, to teach children and youth to read and write, she having behaved in sober conversation."

IBID: p. 110: " Capt. Fisk was succeeded as teacher by William Rogers, who was also subsequently attained to the dignity of captain, was actively employed in town affairs, and appears to have enjoyed the esteem and confidence of his fellow-citizens"

"In 1713, an agreement was made with Wm. Rogers, "to keep school in our town, to teach the youth to read and write, and to sweep the meeting house, and ring the beel for the year, and we do allow him 55s for his allowance."

p. 111: "The name of Nathaniel Rogers occurs as teacher, first in 1726. In 1733 he was made a kind of educator-general for the town."

p. 51: A William Rogers shares in the division of land at Wenham, in 1704-5 "Who drew the sixth lot in the swamp," a party of eight including William, John Perkins, Richard Dodge, Tobias Trow. etc.

The only other Rogers mention in this small history is John Rogers, an early settler of Wenham, and there in 1653. Possibly a close relative? The Wenham birth records show no William for this John, rather a Nathaniel. However, both a William son of Nathaniel, and a Captain William are among the deceased of Wenham in the vital records.

Torrey's marriages prior to 1700 indicate that Jane Rossiter is the widow of Hugh, who then marries Thomas Gilbert.

Children were: Jane ROSSITER.

bulletJane ROSSITER died about 9 Jun 1691 in Taunton, Freetown, Mass.?. (2753) She was born. In the Rhode Island chronicle of Gilberts settling there, is mentioned the Rossitor name.
