POPE, Seth, Capt., Mar. 17, 1726-7. [Seth Esq. of Dartmouth, in 79th year, [on stone
beside those of Deborah and Rebecca] gravestone record, Acushnet Cemetery (established in
the reign of Queen Anne in the old Township of Dartmouth)] According to the Pope
genealogy, there is little known of his early history. "Tradition, in part confirmed
by the records," indicated that about 1670 he appeared as a peddler in Sandwich,
whereupon the constable ordered him to depart, lest in the future he become a charge upon
the town. He accordingly withdrew, remarking that he would come back and buy up the town.
Procuring a boat at Monument, he went to Acushnet, settled within the present limits of
Fairhaven, and ultimately became one of the most wealthy and influential citizens of the
old colony. The Pope genealogy outlines his various accomplishments, and mentions that he
was apparently for many years interested in the coastwise trade, owning a wharf and
warehouse at Acushnet, and a part of the sloop Hopewell and Joanna and Thankful.
In 1700 he made good on his promise to the town that first snubbed him, and purchased a
large amount of realty in the village, including the grist-mill, fulling-mill and
weaving-shop. At the time of his death, his estates in Dartmouth were extensive and
valuable, comprising several farms and dwelling houses, a saw and grist-mill, a
well-stocked store and warehouse, and other property.
MD: Seth2 Pope, who married Deborah Perry and Rebecca; Thomas2 Pope, probably died young;
John2 Pope, probably died young; Sarah2 Pope, married Samuel Hinckley; Joanna2 Pope,
married John Hathaway4 (Sarah3 Cooke, John2, Francis1); Isaac2 Pope.
Thomas1 Pope made his will 9 July, 1683; and the inventory, in which he is called
"of Dartmouth", was taken 4 August, 1683. The will appears to have been probated
at Plymouth 2 November, 1683.

the last day of Desember 1701
Parents: Thomas POPE and Sarah JENNEY.
He was married to Deborah PERRY about 1674 in Barnstable,
Ma?.(2511) Although the Pope genealogy has
Deborah as unknown, she can be traced through the will of Ezra Perry as excerpted below:
Excerpt from the will of Ezra Perry:
Remember too Cows one bed and its ffurniture, one meare and all her Increse, also to my
Son Ezra one Shilling To John Perry my Son one Shilling
to Deborah my Daughter wife to Seth Pope one Shilling To Sarah wife to Epharim Swift one

According to Bowan and the Pope genealogy, Seth Pope apparently married second,
"Rebecca," all the listed children being attributed to Seth and Deborah and born
in Dartmouth. Children were: Hannah POPE .
He was married to Rebecca. (50)

Thomas POPE was born about

Savage 67 years of age in 1675. He died c1683 in Dartmouth, MA.(2519) (2520) [THOMAS
POPE'S WILL]
[Plym. Col. Wills, 4:2: 50] July the 9th 1683
Between the Pope Genealogy, referenced herein, Bowman's notes, and various Vital Records,
This family can be reasonably traced, however there are still many missing links.
The 10 year gap between the births of the first five children and that of Joanna and
Isaac is mysterious.
Joseph Bartlett 3 died 18 February, 1711, in his 73d year, and his wife, Hannah2 Pope
(Thomas1), died 12 March, 1710, in her 72d year. [Gravestones, Burial Hill.]
From what is known of Thomas through wills, deeds and altercations with Plymouth
officials. he was apparently a fairly contentious individual, and ultimately removed from
Plymouth to Dartmouth where two of his children are killed in the disastrous Indian raids
upon the town, i.e., Susannah, her husband, Jacob Mitchell (descendant of Experience
Mitchell and either his wife Mary or Jane Cooke) and John.
See photo for Susannah. Thomas1 Pope made his will 9 July, 1683; and the inventory, in
which he is called "of Dartmouth", was taken 4 August, 1683. The will appears to
have been probated at Plymouth 2 November, 1683.
THOMAS 1 POPE of Plymouth and Dartmouth, Mass., married, first, Anne2 Fallowell (Gabriel)
of Plymouth. She died leaving one daughter, Hannah2 Pope, who became the wife of Joseph
Bartlett 3 (Mary2 Warren, Richard1) of Plymouth.
Thomas1 Pope married, second, Sarah2 Jenney (John1) of Plymouth, who died before her
husband made his will. Thomas1 and Sarah Pope appear to have had seven children: Susanna2
Pope, who married Jacob Mitchell3 (Jane2 Cooke, Francis1); Seth2 Pope, who married Deborah
Perry and Rebecca; Thomas2 Pope, probably died young; John2 Pope, probably
died young; Sarah2 Pope, married Samuel Hinckley; Joanna2 Pope, married John Hathaway4
(Sarah3 Cooke, John2, Francis1); Isaac2 Pope.
The proof of the marriage of Hannah2 Pope and Joseph Bartlett is found in a deed from
Thomas1 Pope to "my Son in law Joseph Bartlett", and in the will of the widow
Katherine Fallowell, which mentions her grandchild "hannah the wife of Joseph
Bartlett".
