Hannah (Widow) PACKARD(1147) was born in BRIDGEWATER, BRISTOL, MA. Mitchell
says Widow Hannah ( ) Packard. This is an assumption she was born in Bridgewater, married
first a Packard, and secondly Samuel. She died. This is possible an incorrect record of
the correct Hannah.

John (2) PACKARD(2294) was born on 20 May 1655 in Weymouth, MA.(2295) Mitchell: Came with fau., mother . . ." from
Windham, near Hingham, in England, in the ship called "The Diligent, of Ipswich, 133
passengers, John Martin, master," Mitchell: John (s. of Samuel) lived at S. B. near
the bridge, which was called, after him, Packard's bridge, 1688, and since called Pope's
bridge.
Weymouth births have him born there. see reference. He was Mentioned In Father's Will on
29 Nov 1684 in Plymouth, MA.(2296) "unto my
son John Packer" 70 acres in Bridgewater "on the Eastward side of the River;
alsoe .... one lott of Meddow in "Meddow Called Poor Meddow Lying in the said
Bridgwater, alsoe .... all my lott of Land att Teticut;"
He died on 16 Mar 1741 in Grave # 120.(2297) (2298) (2299) To sort
through the difficulties of the following notes, there are some things that can be said
with a little certainty. Samuel1 had a son John. He is named in his father's will. This
John2 with reasonable certainty had a wife Judith Winslow ( Taunton VR, Bridgewater VR).
They had a son Joseph3 who settled his father's estate.
At this time there are several known 3rd generation Josephs: this Joseph3 and a son of
Samuel2, who married Elizabeth Lathrop, name Joseph3. The Joseph3 who marries Susanna
Mitchell has children with names that include Judith. The Joseph3 who marries Mary Harris
does not, and child names reflect those of immediate ancestors. Mitchell attributes to a
Joseph 4(Joseph3, John2), a son Winslow, who, indeed, though dying young, gives us a trace
on this family..
All children herein listed are unsubstantiated , other than by specific mention in
Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, who, in turn, may have relied on Savage. Various
"bytes" of information have been found here and there, and are used as place
keepers for the time being. Even child Joseph, whose birth date is nearly ten years after
that of a supposed sister Mary is suspect, with few other children to be accounted for.

He was married to Judith WINSLOW on 12 Apr 1688 in Taunton,
Bristol, MA.(2300) It is interesting to note the
age discrepancy in these two. If dates are correct, he was considerably older than she,
both living long lives, but she outliving him by some 20 years. it does appear that he was
unmarried at the time of his father's death in 1684, as no mention of wife or children are
made for him, though several references are made to other children, their husbands and
their children. See Samuel's will.

Joseph PACKARD Captain(2301) (2302)(2303) was born in 1725 in Bridgewater, MA.(2303) (2304) According to
Mitchell: he and brother John went to Brookfield. Other sources cited in other

baptized on 30 May 1725 in West Bridgewater, MA.(2305)
He was living in 1775 in Brookfield, MA.(290)
Captain Joseph Packard is among those called upon to enlist the men.
Most records are murky, non-existent or simply hints of actual dates and events. Most
"evidence" presented here is circumstantial or seemingly logical, rather than
having the clarity of a succession of probate, will, deed, birth and death records that
would permit irrevocable proofs. Problematic areas, where absolute proof is desired
include:
Judith Winslow (Packard) (John2, Sam1)
Who was her father, and is she a legitimate Mayflower descendant via Judith Winslow, John
Winslow2 and his second marriage to Judith ________, as is recorded, in several prominent
genealogical references, but also contested by good authority. (See Winslow notes)
Temperance Packard:
Her parentage, nor actually that of assumed siblings, Winslow, Timothy, etc. has never
been irrevocably proved. To date, there are no birth records or other legal proceeding in
hand which clearly ties her to Joseph Packard and Sarah Johnson, but numerous clues, early
family notes and some evidence seem to strongly conclude that she was the daughter of
Joseph Packard and Sarah Johnson of Bridgewater and Brookfield.
Family Notes:
In the late 1800's, a Temperance Bruce Edson, a family ancestor, recalled personal
knowledge of Sarah, whom she called Elizabeth and references both her marriage to Joseph
and the birth of their dau. Temperance in 1749. See photo scan. Also see notes on dau.
Temperance.
Birth &Marriage: Joseph Packard and Sarah Johnson
Their known birth and marriage dates are recorded as indicated. The marriage of Joseph
Packard to Sarah Johnson is recorded in the Bridgewater VR, and in several other
genealogies such as the Capt John Johnson volume and the Packard genealogy by Charles
Wight . Both of these, however, seem to rely on Mictchell's account of the Packard
families which may contain an error.
Mitchell & Possible Error:
Mitchell, (admittedly confused) I believe, perpetuates an inaccuracy as it relates to this
family.
Mitchell, believes Joseph4, son of Joseph3 and Susannah Mitchell Packard [John2, Sam1]
rem. to Brookfield, had a son Winslow who went to Dartmouth. This concurs with what we
believe (with evidence) to be true.
Then, however, admitting confusion he gives our Joseph's wife, Sarah, to [Joseph4,
Joseph3, Samuel2, Samuel1] as well as a set of unknown children (Daniel, Abigail, etc.) as
I shall attempt to illustrate.
Joseph Packard [Joseph4, Joseph3, Samuel2, Samuel1] & Abigail Alger:
Joseph4, son of Joseph and Mary Harris, instead of marrying Sarah, I believe, married
Abigail Alger of Easton. There is a marriage of Joseph Packard to Abigail Alger recorded
in the Bridgewater VR who marries in the same year as Joseph and Sarah, but a month or so
apart, she being noted as of Easton. Mitchell says this Joseph dies in Easton of unknown
date. One of the children named by Mitchell in his history and in his confusion over the
marriages of the two Josephs is Abigail, a clue; another, Daniel, the name of this
Joseph's older brother. In general, child names bear little relationship to those names
found in our Joseph Packard ancestral branch, as we shall see.
Joseph Packard [John2, Sam1] & Susannah Mitchell
This Joseph, father of Joseph and Sarah, was a descendant of John Packard who married
Judith Winslow, with Susannah being a descendant of Experience Mitchell (of the Francis
Cooke line through his first wife Jane, but excluding, it is believed, Susannah who was a
descendant of a second marriage. In any event, she and Joseph expectedly bestow child
names indicating possible heritage, such as Parnel (Parnel Winslow), John, (John Packard
or Winslow), Judith, (Judith Winslow), Joseph (Father), Susannah, (Mother).
Joseph Packard [Joseph3, John2, Sam1] & Sarah Johnson
Following a similar tradition, among Joseph and Sarah's attributed children we see the
names Winslow, Susannah and Sarah, Timothy ( as in Mitchell). Temperance and Levi,
however, seem to have no immediately apparent ancestral antecedent.
John Bruce and Temperance Packard
Of significance, however, in determining the parentage of Temperance Packard who marries
John Bruce, child names nearly replicate those of Joseph and Sarah Packard: Winslow, Levi,
Packard and Timothy, for example.
Tracing the lives of Joseph and Sarah Packard:
There is precious little information about their lives to be found. If they indeed lived
in Brookfield, this was an outpost town and records, such as those to be found in
Bridgewater, for example, were lacking. No children, save Sarah, a young daughter, born in
1772 and dying at age 8; the marriage of Temperance, Timothy, and a Captain Joseph Packard
called for military purpose in 1775, ever even indicates their presence there. Nor do we
know when they removed to Brookfield, nor how long they stayed, other than by deduction.
Though Temperance marries John Bruce in Brookfield in 1772, and a sister is born in this
year (Brookfield VR) , in an inhabitants' list of 1750 for Brookfield, there is no mention
of Joseph, nor Sarah, nor any other Packards other than widow Hannah Pickard ( likely the
wife of Daniel4 who has several children recorded) and a Jonathan Pickard. The Bruces are
there by now, however, including John, Charles, Jonas, Antipas. Potters included Daniel,
Theophilus, Silas. and Lt. John Potter.
So when did Sarah and Joseph remove to Brookfield? If he and brother John came together,
as Mitchell seems to suggest, it may not have been until about 1760 when John marries Anna
Pratt. Where did they live in the interim: Bridgewater? Easton? Or were they actually in
Brookfield? The records seem simply non-existent, or by now destroyed. 1760 would have
been some 12 years after John and Sarah married. No identifiable children are recorded in
Bridgewater thus far for these two. Nor are the parent's deaths anywhere recorded, thus
found.
To date the facts and logic, with reservations, are:
Joseph married Sarah in 1748. They removed to Brookfield aft. 1750 and had several, even
perhaps, many children. They were there in 1772, 1780, as a child is born 1772 and dies
abt 1780, Temperance is married to John Bruce in Brookfield 1772/3, and Winslow, via other
documentation, is a Dartmouth graduate and pastor, marries an Abigail Moore and dies
young, about 32.
Joseph is mentioned in 1775 in Brookfield as being "Captain" and one of those
called upon to enlist the men (Temple). So at this time he still apparently resided
Brookfield and would have been about 50-52 years of age. By 1790, according to the census
of this year, there are no Packards identified as being in Brookfield.

Jam's [Converse's] Rig't.
In information recently discovered, by about 1805 Sarah is possibly a widow and in New
Salem with her son Timothy, called Deacon. She perhaps dies there, or removes to Monson at
or about this time. When Deacon Timothy and Betty are dismissed to Monson, Sarah is not
again mentioned in the adjoining or available church records. Another Winslow Packard is
present in New Salem, at this time, and he also shortly removes to Monson with wife
Rachel. This Winslow Packard is likely a son of Timothy's, named for Timothy's brother,
Winslow, by now deceased.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of interest is the wide gap in noted births between the attributed children of Joseph, and
Sara, born early in their marriage (abt 1749-55) and the only other identified child not
born until 1772-- leaving some twenty years between the earlier children and Sarah. Surely
there were other children! If the first few child records were correct, she was having
children every few years, typical of the period. As she was apparently only 16 when
married, she could have had 10 or more children prior to mid-age, as she was successfully
birthing children early on.

?.(2309) Joseph is the only specific child
mentioned by Nahum Mitchell for John. His birthdate is speculative, supposing that he
would be about age 20 when marrying.
LDS Ancestral File says "Joseph Packard (of Bridgewater, Plymouth Co MA) b. ca
1699, p. John Packard & Judity Winslow, m. Susanna Mitchell 31 Dec 1724, d.
1760 Bridgewater, Plymouth Co MA". He died about 1760 in Bridgewater, MA. (2310) Mitchell: "Joseph (s. of John ) m. Susanna.
D. of Thomas Mitchell 1724, and had John, Joseph, Edward, Susanna, and perhaps Mary,
Parnel, Judith and others; she d. 1756, he 1760. John m. Anna, D. of Nathaniel Pratt 1760,
and he and Joseph went to Brookfield; Joseph had a son, Winslow, gra. Dartmouth 1777, and
settled in the ministry. . .It is difficult to distinguish this family from that of Joseph
(8), and there may be some confusion in the accounts here given." Either Mitchell or
Savage says that Joseph settled his old father's estate.
