bullet Experience (1) MITCHELL was born about 1602 in England?. (2113) Wood MF5G:12, indicates that Experience's ancestry remains unknown, with a possible connection with a Thomas Mitchell of England. He immigrated in Aug 1623 to Plymouth Colony, MA. (2114) Experience came on the ship Anne. He died between 1685 and 1689 in Plymouth, MA.(2115) (2116)

EXPERIENCE MITCHELL'S inventory was taken 14 May, 1689, and his will was proved 4 September, 1689; therefore the date of the will, 5 December, 1689, as recorded by the clerk, Samuel Sprague, is doubtless an error. The will must have been made on 5 December in the year 1688, or possibly even earlier.

The will and inventory are recorded in the Plymouth County Probate Records, Volume 1, pages 44 and 45. The wife Mary mentioned in the will was a second wife, the first one having been Jane2

According to MF5G:12: Experience was among several single men in the colony, and he, together with five other unmarried young men, were listed in the Division of Cattle along with Francis Cooke and his family--thus probably living with them at the time.

Mitchell, Experience

Experience Mitchell arrived in Plymouth in 1623 on the Anne, and Banks writes that he was from Duke's Place, London. Underhill (Small Descendants, 1:510), based in part on Dexter (p. 625), thought Experience was the son of Thomas Mitchell of Cambridge, England, who was a member of Francis Johnson's church at Amsterdam, and that Experience was born in Leiden in 1611.

Experience received a letter dated 24 July 1662 from his nephew Thomas Mitchell in Amsterdam in which Thomas mentions having received Experience's letter dated 23 April 1661, and says, "I do also wish my cousin Elizabeth much joy with her [p.328] daughter that God has given her to her six sons. I do also wish my cousin Sarah much joy in her married estate" (PN&Q 3:102-03).

Experience was a Purchaser and was on the 1633 freeman list. He later moved to Duxbury, where he became a highway surveyor on 3 March 1639/40 (PCR 1:141); he also served on various juries (PCR, passim). On 7 June 1659 he was fined ten shillings for refusing to serve on the grand jury (PCR 3:168).

He married, probably not long after the 1627 cattle division, Jane Cooke, daughter of 1620 Mayflower passenger Francis Cooke; though there is no record of their marriage, their son Thomas Mitchell in a deed of 1 August 1672 refers to some land given him by his grandfather Francis Cooke (MD 3:104).

By his first wife Jane, Mitchell had Thomas and Elizabeth, but indirect evidence indicates that the rest of his children, with the exception of Mary, perhaps, were probably by his second wife Mary _____. See John B. Threlfall, "Comments on the Two Wives of Experience Mitchell of Plymouth, Mass.," NEHGR 127:94; Robert S. Wakefield, "Not All the Children of Experience Mitchell Are Mayflower Descendants," TAG 59:28; and Barbara L. Merrick, "Some Descendants of Francis Cooke, Mayflower Passenger," MQ 49:130. Also see Merton Taylor Goodrich, "Gaining Experience—A Problem in the Mitchell Family," TAG 12:193.

In his will, dated 5 December 1684, inventory 14 May 1689, Mitchell named his wife Mary; sons Edward and John; grandsons Experience and Thomas; granddaughter Mary Mitchell; and daughters Mary Shaw, Sarah Hayward, and Hannah Hayward (MD 32:97). His daughter Elizabeth, who married John Washburn, and his son Jacob, who married Susanna Pope, predeceased him.

In 1631 Experience sells his dwelling house, garden plot and fence, leading to the speculation that this may have been the approximate date of Jane's death, leaving him with small children. He was among the list of Freemen in Plymouth in 1633, and again on 7 March 1636/7; in Duxborrow about 1658 and again in Plymouth on May 1670. He was on various committees and held several offices from the years 1637 to 1662. He, like the other early Colonials, was granted additional lands through the years. In 1675/6 Experience and Edward Mitchell were were appointed by the Court to investigate the estate of Jacob Michell, deceased, for the good of his children. Experience, Edward and Joseph Bartlett were later appointed guardians of the children of Jacob Michell, deceased. Experience's will, dated 5 December 1684 and probated 4 September 1689 names son Edward, wife "mary michell", son John, grandson "Exsperience" [son of John] daughters Mary Shaw, Sarah Hayward and Hannah Hayward, grandson Thomas Mitchell and granddaughter mary michel whom he leaves in the care of his son Edward and Joseph Bartlet. His residence is given as Bridgewater. (See will) Parents: Thomas MITCHELL and Maria TROMDIN.

He was married to Jane COOKE after 22 May 1627 in Plymouth Colony, MA. (2117)(2118) Notes:

Rosser, Mayflower Increasings: "m. aft. 22 May 1627, Plymouth, Experience Mitchell . . ."

This date reflects that she was still single in the May 22, 1627 Division of Land.

Rosser: There is much controversy over the children of the two marriages of Experience Mitchell: "MFIP (Mayflower Families In Progress) , Cook:3 states Elizabeth Mitchell was b. 1628 and Thomas Mitchell c 1631. These two have been accepted by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants as Jane Cooke's. Since Thomas was the only Mitchell child known to have received land from grandfather Francis Cook, doubt is cast on the remaining Mitchell children who were born later than Thomas."

Ralph Wood takes exception, however, in his MF5G:12 volume, 1996, and includes Mary "presumed, quite safely, as a daughter of Jane, based on Mary's approximate date of birth.". Mary is born about 1632, presuming Jane married about 20. There is then a near 10-year span before the rest of Experience's children are born, presumably, by his second wife, Mary,.

Another observation is that if Jane died very early in their marriage, Experience was left with near infant children--quite a hardship in any event, and especially so in those days. Many such men would hasten to find a new wife and mother for such small children, and female companionship for themselves, however, Experience doesn't remarry until 1640/1.

Children were: Elizabeth (3) MITCHELL, Thomas[3] MITCHELL, Mary MITCHELL.

He was married to Mary before 1641 in Plymouth, MA?.(2119) The Cooke volume logs this as the date of his first child by his second wife, Mary. Children were: Sarah MITCHELL, Jacob MITCHELL, Edward MITCHELL, John MITCHELL, Hannah MITCHELL.

bullet Hannah MITCHELL was born before 1656 in Plymouth, MA. (2120) Parents: Experience (1) MITCHELL and Mary.

She was married to Joseph HAYWARD.(2121)

bullet Jacob MITCHELL died in 1675 in Dartmouth, MA.(2122) (2123) He was born pre 1650 in Bridgewater, MA.(2124) Pope Genealogy: Both Ensign Jacob Mitchell and his wife are slain by the Indians during the Dartmouth massacre while fleeing to the garrison. They had removed their children to the fort a day prior. "John-num" an Indian captured later confessed to participating in the murder of Jacob, Susannah and her brother John, and was immediately executed.

Curiously, later, all three orphaned children would marry Kingman children, of John and Elizabeth, on the same day.

MD 21:4: Jacob Mitchell's Estate

JACOB MITCHELL3, son of Experience Mitchell, by his first wife, Jane2 Cooke (Francis1), was married at Plymouth, on 7 November, 1666, to Susanna2 Pope (Thomas1). They settled at Dartmouth, and both were killed there, by the Indians, in 1675.
They left three children: Jacob Mitchell4, who married, 1st , Deliverance Kingman, and, 2d, Rebecca Cushman4 (Isaac3, Mary2 Allerton, Isaac1); Thomas Mitchell4, who married Elizabeth Kingman; Mary Mitchell4, who married Samuel Kingman.

bullet Sarah MITCHELL

bullet Sarah MITCHELL was born about 1641 in Plymouth, MA. (2143) A court record of this date shows that Sarah and Nathaniel Brett petition the court saying that the other children of the elderly Sarah "utterly refused" to help in her maintenance, and gives an age of 90, being bedridden for the last four of these years. Parents: Experience (1) MITCHELL and Mary.

bullet Seth MITCHELL was born in 1715 in Bridgwater, MA. (2144) He died in 1802 in Bridgewater, MA?. (2145) Wife is quoted as being an Ann Latham, a Mayflower Descendant through Mary Chilton, Susanna Winslow, James Latham, Thomas... (P. 358, Cooke, Mayflower Births & Deaths, Rosser) Parents: Thomas Curry MITCHELL and Elizabeth KINGMAN.

bullet Susanna MITCHELL(2146) was born on 10 Feb 1703 in BRIDGEWATER, BRISTOL, MA.(2147) (2148) Susanna is found in Rosser's Mayflower Births & Deaths Volume 1, as she is a descendant of Experience Mitchell through (it is thought) Mary his second wife and their son Jacob, Thomas and This Thomas. This Mayflower line has been amended to exclude those children thought to be of his second marriage, and thus she is not of Mayflower Descent unless through other ancestral marriages. She died in 1756. bullet Thomas MITCHELL was born prob bef 1588 in Possibly Amsterdam, Holland. (2153) Placekeeper to assume not less than 18 years of age when married. Not documented. Wood believes Thomas Mitchell to be the likely father of Experience. Thomas married 1st Maria Tromdlin and married 2nd in Amsterdam, Holland shortly after 15 April 1606 Margrite Williams of Leyden, widow of Christoffel Stochin. He was living in Leyden, in 1622 when he made an affidavit. A 24 July 1662 letter of Thomas Mitchell of Amsterdam to his uncle Experience Mitchell is further proof of the relationship. Wood's instinct is that Maria is likely the mother of Experience.

In another study by John B. Threlfall, in which he presented a document found among the State Papers, Domestic Series, Charles I, in the British Archives, vol. 236, it is seen that a Mary Smedley and Mary Michell of Amsterdam (3 April 1633) wished to return from a visit to England where they had visited friends. Mary Michell testified that she was the wife of Thomas Michell and had lived with him about eight years. In the same article is a marriage recorded in Dutch with an English translation for a Thomas Mitchell, presumed to be the father of Mary's husband Thomas Mitchell.

He was married to Maria TROMDIN.(2154) Their marriage date is not enumerated in MF5G:12, nor any other birth or death data. Children were: Experience (1) MITCHELL.

He was married to Margrite WILLIAMS about 15 Apr 1606 in Amsterdam, Holland.(2155)

Samuel and Mary (Mitchell4) Kingman had six children recorded at Bridgewater*:

bullet Thomas(4) MITCHELL was born about 1660 in prob. Plymouth Colony, MA. (2159) Parents: Thomas[3] MITCHELL and Unknown UNKNOWN.

bullet Thomas[3] MITCHELL was born about 1630 in Plymouth, MA. (2160)(2161) Wood MF5G:12: provides these dates based on the fact that Thomas was a known son of Jane, as he receives an inheritance from his grandfather Francis Cooke; that he was born after 1627 (when Jane is still single) ; and that he was born certainly before Experience remarries in 1640. Such a date would as well coincide with the typical birth patterns of the early families of births occurring quite adjacent to one another. He died after 1672.(2162) (2163) Wood, MF5G:12: says he died after 1 August, 1672, the last known record that equates this Thomas Mitchell with Francis Cooke, when Thomas sells land in 1672 given to him by his grandfather, Francis Cooke. Very little else is known about him, other than conjecturally. There is some speculation that he may be the Thomas Mitchell of Rhode Island and New London. In an earlier volume: Mayflower Families in Progress, by the society of Mayflower Descendants, Several children and an unknown wife are attributed to Thomas, and are kept here as place keepers. He was at this time thought to have been the Thomas of Block, Rhode Island.

In the new 5G volume by Wood, he does not carry Thomas' line forward, saying very little is known about Thomas, and though the speculations are with possible merit, there is no substantiating proof. If married, we do not have his wife's name; if children we have no positive identification according to Wood.

On 1/11 Aug., 1672, Thomas Mitchell of Duxbury sold to Richard Wright of Plymouth his share in this grant for £60, and in the deed states that it was given him by his grandfather, Francis Cooke of Plymouth. [Col. Deeds,3:234] Parents: Experience (1) MITCHELL and Jane COOKE.

(2166) This is a conjectural father for Elisha, and a placekeeper marriage for this Samuel, though the birth and marriage dates are appropriate for this Samuel to have been the son of Martha and Samuel--nor are there other likely Samuel's to be found in Sudbury vital records. Children were: Elisha HOWE.

bullet Abigal MOORE Parents: Judah MOORE and Mary SWIFT.

She was married to Winslow PACKARD on 18 Feb 1782 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co, MA. (2167)(2168) There were several Moores in Brookfield, where, I believe, he was presumably born, or lived, though I can find no birth records for any of the Packard children other than Sara, who died young. See below

Note: In memoirs of the Rev. Z. S. Moore, D.D.(President of Amherst College, NEHG Register, Volume 1, October 1847, It is noted that one of his sisters (we have Abigail) married the Rev. Winslow Packard, who was born in Bridgewater in 1761, was graduated at Dartmouth College in 1777, settled over a church and society in Wilmington, Vt, July, 1781, and died Oct. 12, 1784. He was married to Mary SWIFT on 24 May 1759 in ?.(2184) In the John Moore Genealogy Addenda, she is said to of Lebanon, Conn., and their child, Zephaniah Swift, is mentioned as born in Palmer, Mass, a professor of Dartmouth, President of Williams College, and first president of Amherst College. A later genealogy of a descendant Z.A. Moore, brings us to Winslow as marrying Abigail, a sister. of Zephaniah S. Moore. Children were: Abigal MOORE .

bullet Margery MOORE died after May 1666 in Duxbury, MA. In a will of this date John Washburne's will gives property to his son Philip, but stipulates he was not to take actual possession until after the deaths of his father and mother.
