Robert LATHAM(1881) was born about 1623 in England (Prob).(1882) He died before Feb 1688/89 in East Bridgewater,
MA. (1883)(1884) He
lived first in Cambridge, then moved to Plymouth, later to Marshfield and finally with
Susanna to E. Bridgewater
Savage: He notes that "Mitchell" thinks him son of William of the
Mayflower." According to Banks in "The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim
Fathers" William came as a servant in 1620, was taxed in Plymouth in 1632, and later
resided in Duxbury. He returned to England after 1641 and later emigrated to the Bahamas
where he died. . Savage adds that he was a boy under Carver's charges, and for the div. of
lds. in 1624, was of Duxbury between 1637-9 and Marshfield from 1643-1648, and that
(quoting Bradford) "aft. so long resid. here, he went home to Eng. thence to the
Bahams, and d. of starvation." We give Robert to William Latham only as a
matter of study. There is no proof to date.
On 4 March 1654/55(Robert) Latham was indicted for felonious cruelty to his servant
John Walker, age about fourteen, by unreasonable correction, by withholding necessary food
and clothing, and by exposing Walker to extremities of the seasons, whereby he died. The
trial jury found him guilty of "manslaughter by chaunce medley," and he was
sentenced to be burned in the hand and, having no lands, to have all his personal property
confiscated. Latham's wife, Susanna, as noted in chapter 9, was presented by the grand
jury for being in great measure guilty with her husband in exercising extreme cruelty
toward their late servant John Walker. In her case, however, the presentment continued
without trial for three years, until the court on 1 June 1658 ordered that she would be
held for trial if anyone wished to prosecute her for the offense, but no one came forth,
and the court ordered the presentment erased from the records.22"

Robert as child is speculative placekeeper! Although Mitchell thinks Robert to be a son,
see other notes, I don't believe this has been proved. According to Banks in "The

Mark (1) LATHR0P(1895) was born on 12 Mar 1617 in Cherry Burton, Yorks,
England.(1896) Mark the fau. is said in this
pedigree to have been born in Cherry Burton, Yorks England, Christened 12 March 1617. He
was living in 1643 in Salem, MA. (1897)(1898) Source Note Savage: "MARK, Salem 1643 rem. to

Source Note Lo-Lathrop Memoir: Who is this "kinsman Thomas Lothrop." Would it be
Capt. Thomas, who is later killed at the infamous Battle of Bloody Brook? He too, was of
Salem, and later of Beverly, which was set off from Salem. The Lo-Lathrop Memoir thinks
Thomas a near kinsman, as well, perhaps, of Rev. John Lothrop, preceeding him to New
England by a few months. He was admitted freeman in Salem, May 14, 1634. Mark joins the
community in October, some five months later, and a month after the Griffin arrives with
Rev. John Lathrop and his followers.
"At a meeting of the selectmen, the 17th 3rd mo. 1652, granted to Hugh Woodberrie,
Marke Lothroop and Thomas Priton a spot of medoe, lying between Benjamin Felton's medoe
and the Great Swamp, near Wenham, to be equally divided between them." He was living
in 1656 in Bridgewater, MA.(1899) Lo-Lathrop
Memoir: In 1657 he took the "Oath of Fidelitie," and in 1658 was elected
constable. He was for twenty-five years a prominent participant in town affirs, often
elected as a juryman for trials, a grand juror, surveyor of highways, and on of the
committee appointed "to lay out all the waies requisett in the township of
Bridgewater." He died on 25 Oct 1685 in Bridgewater, MA.(1900) (1901) Lo-Lathrop
Memoir: The volumes give the inventory of the estate. The appraisers are John Hayward,
John Field, John Haward, Thomas Snell, Sameul Lathrop, Samuel Surverick, Mark Lathrop,
Samuel Packer [ Packard). Samuel Lathrop attests to the veracity of the inventory and is
granted Administration.
He is noted by the memoir as having four children, which agrees with Savage, saying that
it appears his sons are by his death 21 years of age or more, and were freeman living in
Bridgewater. Variants are many: Lathrop, Lothroppe, Lothorp, Lowthrop, Lawthrop, etc.
What We Know About Mark: (Lo-Lathrop Memoir)
In 1643, Salem, Mark Lothrop "is receaved an inhabitant, and hath a request for some
ground neer to his kinsman, Thos. Lothrop." He is still in Salem as of 1652, as land
was granted to him, Hugh Woodberrie, and Thomas Priton, to be equally divided between
them.
By 1656, Mark is in Bridgewater, and one of the proprieters of the town, and for about 25
years held a prominent place in town affairs. He died Oct. 25, 1685, and his son Samuel
was appointed administrator of his estate. His children were Elizabeth, Samuel, Mark and
Edward.
Who Was Mark Lathrop:
The relationship between the Lo-Lathrops of early Massachusetts has long been sought.
Several early English wills strongly suggest that the famous Rev. John Lathrop of the
Barnstable area, Mark of Salem, Duxbury and lastly Bridgewater, and the historical Capt.
Thomas Lathrop killed at the Battle of Bloody Brook had, perhaps common ancestry.
At least one genealogy suggests that Rev John and Mark were, perhaps Uncle and Nephew,
Mark being the son of Samuel Lathrop of England, son of Lawrence, with Rev. John, being
son of Lawrence's brother Thomas. This information from a United Ancestor CD genealogy,
however, with absolutely no reference sources.
It would appear that among the best sources for information on this branch is still the
early Lo-Lathrop Family Memoir by Huntington. As this volume went to press, It was noted
that Mark was definitely not a brother to Rev John, as the will of the younger, unmarried
brother was found in England. This is further confirmed in an article found in NEHGR:
Genealogical Gleanings In England. (See photos .)
In all, the suggested ancestry presented here is but a placekeeper for further research.
Descendants of Mark, the line of direct interest, are for the most part, here presented as
found in the Lo-Lathrop Memoir, together with any substantiating vital or probate records
found to date, and other misc. material.
Further English research supports Rev John's immediate ancestry (see NEHGR: October, 1930,
pp 437-39; NEHGR: 113, January, 1959, p. 65, but does little to further enlighten us as to
Mark's relationship with this family.
Lawrence La-Lothrop:
Lo-Lathrop Memoirs, p. 15-18: Early wills found in England substantiate only that Lawrence
was a son of Robert and Ellen, who had a wife Elizabeth and children. The will of
Lawrence's mother makes a bequest to his wife and his two children, Edward and Agnes. The
only other Lawrence therein mentioned was Lawrence, son of Thomas and his 3rd wife ( ),
who was baptized in Etton, Aug. 29, 1659, and is mentioned in the will of his nephew
Richard, 1659 as the father of three children. He was, in 1641, one of the witnesses to
his brother Richard's will. Parents: Samuel LATHR0P (S) and Margaret PRIESTWOOD.
Children were: Elizabeth LATHROP , Samuel (2) LATHROP, Mark LATHRUP, Edward LATHRUP.

This information comes from the United Ancestors CD #100, and does not have source
material, however, in cross referencing available English wills NEHGS, and the Lo-Lathrop
Memoir, there would appear to be substance to the relationships stated in this genealogy,
and thus are included here as place keeper for future research. Parents: Lawrence LATHROP (S) and Elizabeth HOWELL.

Rev John LATHROP died on 8
Nov 1653 in Barnstable, MA. Source: Automated Archives, Inc. CD #100. Rev. John La(o)throp
is, of course, one of the notable religious leaders of early New England. He was born ?.
From Lo-Lathrop Account:
He first was know as curate of a parish church in Egerton, County of Kent. Ultimately
unable to sanctify the view of the traditional church of England, he renounced his orders,
and presided first over an illegal gathering of dissenters like himself for eight years,
escaping vengeance.
In 1632, however, he and his small band of followers whose sanctuary was that of room in a
house of a brewers clerk, were raided by a bishop's man , Tomlinson, and his band, who had
tracked them to their worshipping place. The date was April 22, 1632, and 42 of their
number (18 escaping) were fettered and sent to Clink Prison, Newgate. His followers
apparently lingered here for months and released.
He, being considered too dangerous to the church remained in Prison. While he languished
in prison, his wife died (he being briefly permitted to "commend her to God",
and left behind numerous children who appealed to the Bishop at Lambeth for his release.
The Bishop granted him liberty, which appears to be limited, perhaps something akin to our
contemporary "parole." Suffice it to say, he, with reasonable haste repaired to
New England. He arrived on the Ship Griffin, together with others of his "flock"
Sept, 1634.
He received warm welcome, but later removed to Barnstable, due to differences with some of
his people over baptism, of which he disapproved. He remained here for 14 years. He
required no creeds, nor confessions of faith, believed that man is not responsible to
fellow man in matters of faith and conscience, tolerated differences of opinion, and was,
apparently, in all, an independent thinker who held opinions in advance of his times.
After a dedicated, and apparently illustrious ministry, he died Barnstable, Nov 8. 1653.
