John JENNEY emigrated in
1623.(1517) He died in Jun 1644 in Plymouth
Colony, MA. (1518) He was born in Norwich,
Holland ?. (1519)
Jenney, John
John Jenney arrived at Plymouth in 1623 on the Little James with his wife Sarah and
children Samuel, Abigail, and Sarah. Captain Altham of the Little James (Three Visitors,
p. 24) noted that "Good wife Jennings was brought abed of a son aboard our
ship." Banks called Jenney a cooper of Norwich, County Norfolk, but Leiden records of
his 1614 marriage to Sarah Carey, of Monk's Soham, County Suffolk, call him a brewer's man
from Norwich (Dexter, p. 619), and Winslow also called him a brewer and noted that he was
among those Englishmen in Holland who could speak Dutch and would sometimes take communion
in the Dutch Church (Hypocrisie Unmasked, p. 63). He owned a grain mill in Plymouth, and
he was a Purchaser, but not an Undertaker, as has been written. He was one of the colony's
leaders, however, serving as an Assistant.
After he and his wife died, his family moved to Dartmouth, with which the name Jenney
became associated. See the article in TAG 35:70 by Bertha Clark, whose excellent
manuscript on the Jenney family is at NEHGS in Boston. Also of interest is the account
given of the Jenney family in Small Descendants 2:646; see also Frederick G. Jenny,
"John Jenny," NEHGR 115:233. John's son Samuel, apparently the son born on the
Little James, married Susanna Wood; daughter Sarah married Thomas Pope as his second wife;
and daughter Abigail married Henry Wood and lived in Yarmouth and Middleborough (see
Bowman, "Mistress Sarah Jenny's Will and Inventory," MD 8:171). In John Jenney's
will, dated 28 December 1643, he cautioned, "Whereas Abigaile my eldest Daughter had
somewhat given her by her grandmother and Henry Wood of Plymouth aforesaid is a suter to
her in way of marriage my will is that if shee the said Abigaile will Dwell one full yeare
wth mr. Charles Chauncey of Scittuate before her marriage (pvided he be willing to
entertaine her) that then my said Daughter Abigall have two of my cowes and my full
consent to marry wth the said Henry Wood" (MD 6:170); however, the marriage took
place four months later on 28 April 1644 (MD 13:86). [p.316]
On 2 January 1633/34 rates were again assessed by the new governor, Thomas Prence, and
William Bradford, Captain Standish, John Howland, Stephen Hopkins, John Doane, William
Gilson, William Collier, John Jenny, Robert Hicks, Jonathan Brewster, Kenelm Winslow, and
Stephen Deane. Only eighty individuals were rated this time, and we can note that some of
the names on the 1632/33 list, but missing from the 1633/34 list, were among those who had
died in the epidemic, though in a few cases their widows took their places. The ratings
consisted of:26
£0/9 shillings45 individuals
£0/12 shillings7 individuals
£0/18 shillings13 individuals
£1/4 shillings3 individuals
£1/7 shillings8 individuals
£1/10 shillings1 individual (Stephen Hopkins)
£1/16 shillings1 individual (Isaac Allerton)
£2/5 shillings2 individuals (William Collier &
Edward Winslow)
On 1/11 Oct., 1634, John Jenney, Francis Cooke and five others were appointed to lay out
highways for Plymouth. [C. O., I:71]

"Three or four of grandmother Johnston's children were born in Kentucky. Therefore,
she must have lived in KY for some time after her marriage--not have gone to Piqua

The marriage date of 1716 also comes from the Johnson Genealogy. They have her as marrying
Joseph, removing to Middletown, Conn. about 1739 and to Leicester, Mass. before 1745.
If this is a correct assumption it would be that Joseph married Hannah Johnson and his
sister Rebecca married David Johnson, sister and brother, and children of Isaac and
Abigail Leavitt Johnson. Not too far fetched.

Genealogy of Captain John Johnson of Roxbury, Mass, Generations I to XIV, by Paul Franklin
Johnson, Editor 1945 p.2: "John Johnson, with his family, came to this country in the
fleet with Winthrop, landing at Salem, June 22, 1630. He settled in Roxbury . . ."
The preface goes on to mention his active participation in the community, including
Surveyor General, and Deputy to the House of Deputies for 21 years. He was the first Clerk
of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery, the oldest military organization in the country.
His son Isaac was its Captain.
This genealogy absolutely disputes a John as first child which is apparently commonly
attributed to John I and suggests the John referenced is that of Isaak Johnson as shown by
the church records. "It is certain that no JOHN came over with the family. There is
no evidence whatever that there was any child other than the five given above."
Isaac, Mary, Humphrey, Elizabeth, Sarah. All children were born in England and originally
attributed to wife Margery. They are now known to be children of his first wife Mary who
died a year before he emigrated to New England, after which he married Margery.
His second wife Margery died in 1655 and he married third Grace (Negus) widow of Barnabas
Fawer, he dying a few years later..
Capt. John and Mary (Heath) Johnson
John JOHNSON - b. about 1588, England; d. Sep. 30, 1659, Roxbury, MA. It has been
suggested that he was the son of John JOHNSON and Alice. John's will, dated Sep. 30, 1659
(the day he died) and proved Oct. 15, 1659 names son Isaac as co-executor. Arrived in New
England with the Winthrop fleet at Salem, Jun. 22, 1630. He settled at Roxbury, MA and was
made Freeman on May 18, 1631. Subsequently served town and colony in many capacities,
including Constable (first on Oct. 19, 1630), Surveyor General, Town Clerk, Deputy to the
House of Deputies, and Clerk of the Military Company of Massachusetts. The position as
Surveyor General of Arms and Ammunitions of the Colonies made Capt. Johnson responsible
for the acquisition, maintenance and distribution of the primary means of protection. Gov.
John Winthrop wrote in his Journal under the date of Feb. 6, 1645:
John Johnson, the Surveyor General of Arms and Ammunition, a very industrious and faithful
man in his place, having built a fair house in the midst of the town, with divers barns
and outhouses, it fell on fire in the day time, no man knowing by what occasion, and there
being in it seventeen barrels of the country's powder, and many arms, all was suddenly
burnt and blown up, to the value of four or five hundred pounds, wherein a special
providence of God appeared, for, he, being from home, the people came together to help and
many were in the house, no man thinking of the powder till one of the company put them in
mind of it, whereupon they all withdrew, and soon after the powder took fire and blew up
all about it, and shook the houses in Boston and Cambridge, so that men thought it had
been an earthquake, and carried great pieces of timber a great way off, and some rags and
such light things beyond Boston meeting house, there being then a stiff gale south, it
drove the fire from the other houses in the town (for this was the most northerly)
otherwise it had endangered the greatest part of the town.
John was one of the founders of the town and church at Roxbury, MA and, together with his
sons Isaac and Humphrey, was an original donor to the Free School in Roxbury.
His second wife was possibly Margery SCUDDER, daughter of William (d. 1607) and Margery
SCUDDER of Darenth, Kent. The will of William SCUDDER was dated July 27,1607, and probated
November 4, 1607, naming John JOHNSON, Sr., John JOHNSON, Jr. and daughter Margaret.
Married first 21 Sep 1613, Ware, Hertfordshire, England, second by 1633 Margery (b.
England; bur. 9 Jun 1655, Roxbury, MA), and third 1655 or later Grace NEGUS (d. Dec. 19,
1671), widow of Barnabas FAWER, and sister of Jonathan and Benjamin NEGUS.
Parents: John Sr. JOHNSON and Hannah
